Canadian Taxes

Hello! I am a Canadian freelancer from BC. I was wondering if someone could explain why PST is being charged on my Upwork fees when, from my understanding, this tax is only meant to apply to physical goods. I understand the GST, but the PST makes no sense.

Hi Senica

PST (Provincial Sales Tax), is levied on various goods and services, including the digital services that we offer. It is levied, in addition to GST, in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

To comply with this law, we need to collect these taxes on the services we provide to freelancers, agencies, and clients in Canada and forward this tax to the Canadian tax authorities. We do not collect the tax on the payments clients make to their freelancers on Upwork.
