Client asking to transfer money to local bank, is it legal and safe?

hi everyone, I got a new client who is offering me $1200 and asking me to send 50K INR to a person's bank in India directly. He is saying, he will make an hourly project ( I asked for fixed though but he didn't agree)  and will send $1200 in advance and I will add beneficiary in 1 day and then next day he will end contract and as soon he will end it, I will transfer 50K to his person.
Also, he saying that he will then hire me for actual project which is of my interest for which I bid actually.

So, please give the advise, how shall I proceed. Is this safe here on upwork regarding my profile and also, can he claim back or anything like that. His actual project is something bigger and I am really interested in that but not sure about his this offer. So, please guide me, what shall I do?

Thanks
Ekta

Sounds like a scam to me ๐Ÿ™‚

Also payments off platform are not allowed.
So stay away from this one.

Hi Ekta,

Please report to upwork by opening a ticket.

It's a scam. That's how they start.

I have experienced a similar thing before and had to report to Upwork.

The person's profile was taken down immediately.

Thanks

Ekta:

He's just trying to steal your money. There is no way for you actually earn any money from this.

What you should do is stop communicating with him completely. Block him in the Upwork Messaging tool. He is wasting your time.

We would like you to click the "Flag as inappropriate" button/link in the top-right corner of the job posting and report him.

re: "His actual project is something bigger and I am really interested in that but not sure about his this offer."

That's funny. No, his actual project is stealing your money.

Thank you all for your valuable responses.

But one question, can he claim back amount even after ending the contract?

And also, even if he do order on upwork and I transfer manually then also this is against upwork rules?

Sorry, but I am new here so not have much idea.
Thanks again

It's a scam.

Yeah, I understand Paul but can he claim back amount even after ending the contract?

Do yourself a favour and read up on money laundry etc.He can transfer himself  if it is that urgent. Why should he pay you for it and who who will cover the fees? Are you fine with loosing $2400? Because that's how it is going to feel like.

New freelancers are often contacted by scam clients.

Ekta,

Also note that the ToS I think prohibits use of the site as a money transfer service.

Upwork is not a money transfer service.

You have no business wondering whether he can claim back or not claim back his money when you have confirmed the project itself is a scam.

Some other freelancer didn't listen after being warned about a scam and got his account permabanned in one fell swoop in the fallout with Upwork.

Don't say you weren't told.

Thanks for letting me know. I am not gonna take his order and in job post their is nothing like that.
