Client had offered me to pay outside upwork

A potential client had offered me to pay outside upwork via paypal and wrote his email address in the chat room, to which I had politely notified him against doing it and assured him that I would only be accepting and working on this platform. Furthermore, I had "reported" his message just to know he understood that I wouldn't be accepting any work or payment outside upwork, he had sent me a contract offer.

Without discussing further with the "Upwork Support Community", I had cancelled the report I earlier made on that particular message, but before doing so I had already gotten the message from the "Upwork Help Support" saying that they referred to my "reporting" to a specialised team for further appropriate action.

Now that I have cancelled the report since I have received the contract offer already, will it cause any trouble for me on my account, on the basis of reporting and un reporting in a matter of an hour or so?

I now feel I should've consulted with an experienced community contributor or a moderator of this forum.

You can't "un-report" something that has already been seen.

I assume you had the good sense not to accept the contract?

I don't quite so readily report clients unless they can not be educated into doing the right thing. Many simply don't know any better and need information, not being reported.

Thanks for replying,

Yes I haven't still accepted the contract yet, and you're absolutely right about educating them before finally deciding to "Report" them if they still don't seem to get educated.

My case seems to be different now, and what could be the consequences for both the freelancer and client, after I reported him (already feeling sorry for doing so)

No consequences for you, obviously, the client will get a stern talking to from Upwork if it is the first time, but if something like that has happened before, the client could be suspended.

Do clients generally know if we report them? Also, would it be a wise thing to accept the contract now, I have a fear of getting a negative feedback (private) if he knows that I reported him. What would you advice me to do in a situation like this?

That's up to you. I would probably not accept the contract. Not because I am afraid of feedback, but because I would feel like a hypocrite first reporting a client and then working with them.

You could just come clean and apologise to the client for reporting him; say that you made a terrible mistake and you misunderstood that he was just new, as opposed to someone who was trying to scam you. (I don't think that Upwork will ban this client, because as soon as they look into it, won't they see that the client did hire a freelancer through the proper channels?)

It seems like some freelancers are way too trusting, whereas others are way too quick to assume the worst. It's a delicate balance. :-)

lmao you reported a client who just didn't know, huh? And when he said he's fine paying through Upwork you realized that maybe you should not get excited about being a narc when you could have just found yourself a cool client. haha So now you've reported the client and possibly angered him after he created a contract on Upwork AND if he gets kicked off of Upwork you're out the money.  lol This place is so hilarious.
