Client not responding / paying

Hi there,

I was asked to do undergo a task for a client and completed the task within a few days.

Submitted the work and have now not received a response for 10 days and have not received payment.

Shall I end the contract?

what is the best way to go about this?

Once you submit your work, your client will review and either approve the milestone or ask for changes.

  • The client has 14 days from the most recent submission on a milestone to review and approve or request changes. Approval releases the payment from escrow to you
  • If your client doesn't respond to any milestone submission within 14 days, the deposit is automatically released to you
  • You may file an escrow dispute if the client refuses to release funds for a completed milestone. Escrowed funds won't be released back to the client unless you approve their return or undergo dispute mediation

Important: If you re-submit a milestone, the process above resets and your client will have 14 days to review the milestone from the time you re-submitted it.

Clients have 14 days (!) from when you submit the work using the "submit work for payment" function on the contract (if fixed rate).

After 14 days, the amount funded for the milestone is automatically approved and the money moved to your "Pending" balance.

If the contract is hourly, you get paid for any time you correctly tracked automatically.

In neither scenario is the client under any obligation to respond or proactively pay. It is all automatic if you have used Upwork correctly.

Do NOT end the contract, as this will send the fund back to the client if it is a fixed rate contract.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I used the manual tracker of time.

I’m currently owed $200 - not a lot, but it’s my first experience of upwork.

Best way to go about this?

Thanks,

It's an hourly contract? In that case, you get paid automatically if your client has been successfully charged. However: Manual time is in no way protected, so if the client doesn't pay or disputes, you will not get paid a single Cent.

You can see on your Reports Overview Page in which stage the funds are. You should also familiarise yourself with how payments are processed on Upwork. See When will I get paid?

I was asked to submit an example of work that I would provide for the client, capped at 10 hours.

I did 5 hours of work and recorded the work manually. The deadline was 1st November but I delivered a few days before.

That was over 10 days ago now and still no response from client.

So I’m guessing I won’t get paid for it?

Hi Jack,

I would be happy to help. I checked and it looks like your funds are currently under the Pending tab on your Overview page. This represents the standard security hold period in which funds cannot be withdrawn. Hourly payments are in the security period from the time the client review ends on Friday to when the funds are released on Wednesday.

Your client is automatically invoiced and billed for the hours you log according to the weekly billing cycle. You may want to check this page to find more information about getting paid for Hourly Contracts.

Let us know if you have further questions.

It's hourly. I think the guy can't figure out how to download his money and when.
