Client retaliates for not doing free work after contract ended

I had a real nasty experience with an angry client. He kept requesting work outside of what was agree and showing disrespect, so I ended the contract. Once the contract was ended he kept requesting free work. I blocked him. He left the most hateful review someone can write. What can a person do in my position? please help.

Hi Oscar,

I checked your messages with this client on your account and unfortunately didn't see any proof of your claim. If you have been communicating outside of Upwork, please file a ticket with our support team, together with screen grabs of your communication with your client so that this client can be reviewed.

In addition to what Petra has already shared, feedback from clients whose accounts have been suspended for a policy violation or who have a history of poor collaboration and negative feedback from other freelancers is excluded from the Job Success Score calculation. I would recommend that moving forward, please be sure to leave honest feedback about your client.

So when you left this feedback, you weren't entirely truthful?

 Essentially you have 2 options:

  • Resolve the situation with the client. Once it is resolved, the client may be willing to change their feedback. However, the private feedback and its impact on your JSS will remain.
  • Refund the contract in full, in which case it will no longer be visible on your profile. However, the private feedback and its impact on your JSS will remain.

Good point, I always leave positive reviews.   We both agree on ending the contract. I never saw this coming. Well, I guess I will have to live with this.

For all kinds of reasons - please leave realistic client reviews. I have some of the most terrific clients ever, but if one is a jerk, I try to do my part in this community by giving other freelancers a heads up about that client. I very much appreciate it when another freelancer does it for me. Thanks, Denise

Denise, you are absolutely right, this is my first bad experience with a client since I've been here. I even offered the guy a refund (Hourly contract) he hasn't  reply yet.  He sends me an invitation, I decline the first offer, he made another offer.( I got the feeling that he was trying to get me from the beginning) . It is what it is.

It is hilarious that you left such a nice comment to him... Now your situation looks even worse

It is, and you know what.?I recorded the conversation on Skype, I thought we ended on good terms. I also have proof that he requested work that was not agreed.  This is my only negative review, at the end of the day, I highly doubt that will have a negative impact.

You are mistaken. If you don't believe that, wait until the next JSS update rolls around and see for yourself.

That's just a number, I do have a good relationship with my clients. I will have to work the extra mile in order to get that number up.

Oscar, you should respond to the client's one star feedback to give your side of the story, but be brief and professional and only address what the client wrote about your work.

I did, I never saw this coming, I thought we were on good terms so I left a positive review. I guess my future clients will have to speak for me, cause there isn't anything  I could do on my end I even extended a refund offer.
