Upwork does not verify the validity of clients. There are many red flags you can look for on your end in order to avoid scam clients. Personally, I don't even care if a client is "valid" or not.

I just care about the client's behavior. Mainly: Is the client paying me as expected?

I have worked as a freelancer since 2014. I have completed over 300 jobs on Upwork. Over 5000 hours. Feel free to click on my name and look at my profile.

In all that time, I have never checked whether or not a client is valid.

But it takes me less than a second to recognize if a client is a scammer. I don't waste my time with scammers. Frankly, scammers never even contact me. Because scammers have a job to do. That job is making money by scamming freelances. And scammers don't bother contacting experienced freelancers.

But if a scammer accidentally contacts me, I don't waste my time communicating with them or thinking about them.
