Client wants me to connect elsewhere

Hello guys I'm a newbie. I submitted a proposal yesterday and then last night i received a message from the client stating if I was interested then i needed to contact them on what's app. Is this normal practice? It seemed like a red flag to me... any advice?

It is normal for scammers, your red-flag senses are good. Also, just for you to know, it is against Upwork rules to contact client outside Upwork before contract is in place ( after it is allowed ). You're a newbie and that makes you more of a target for scamming, pay attention to client's work history and payment verification.
