Closed an account and would like to sign up again but keep getting 'This email is already in use'

I closed my account about a month ago and would like to sign up again but when I use the email address I used previously on the sign up page it tells me "This email is in use, would you like to sign in?". When I follow thorugh with the prompt to sign in I get the message "This email address is already in use."  

Can anybody help with getting me out of this sign in loop?
