Commissions over 500$

Hello all, I'm new here and just had a questions for the Upwork commission.

I recently did my first job paid $500, for which I understand there is a one time 20% commission. The client was happy with my work and gave me a bonus of $50 extra. Normally I would have thought this would be charged 10% as I've already earned and paid the 20% for the first $500. Anyway Upwork charged 20% commission on this too. Is it normal? Just wanted to know. Thanks for your help!

Hi Adrian,

I checked this for you and the correct Service Fee was charged for the earnings above 500USD.

$450.00 USD x 20% = $90.00 USD
$50.00 USD x 10% = $5.00 USD
Total blended service fee: $95.00 USD

Please check this under your Transaction History, invoice number is ending with 8391.

Thank you!

Hi Adrian,

Additional fees were charged as Service Fee for Bonus payment and VAT for Service Fees.

Thank you!

Lobby your government to stop imposing VAT?

Wow great idea!

Where exactly does it say on the site that bonuses are charged a "service fee". Can't find it anywhere. Thanks

Hi Andrian,

As the Upwork charges commission fee on the earned money, similarly deducts its commission from the bonuses. The same rule  applies for the tip/bonus etc.

I also won the bonus once and the commission fee was charged.

Best wishes.

Thanks

Hi Adrian,

Please note that Service Fee charged for your Bonus Payment is:

$50.00 USD x 20% = $10.00 USD

I addition to that, VAT was charged:

  • VAT for Service Fee: $10.00 USD x 20% = $2.00 USD
  • VAT for Service Fee: $95.00 USD x 20% = $19.00 USD

I hope this helps.

Thank you!

WOW. $31 deducted from a $50 bonus ($50 minus $10 service fee minus $2 VAT service fee- $19 VAT service fee)- that seems steep....

The VAT was charged on the service fee on the entire $550, not just on the $50.

So you'd altogether you've been charged $105 as fees, plus VAT on that $105

What was charged on the $50 was 10% service fee ($5) and VAT on the service fee at whatever rate VAT is in your country

Why, when he'd already been paid $ 500 under the contract?

One could get the impression that you deliberately refuse to understand simple math. Get a VAT number, then you don't have to pay it.

But I'll give you something else to contemplate: Your job does not show up in your work history. That's really strange, because it should. What is going on?

Yes, it does.

Didn't when I looked a few minutes earlier. But anyway, just wanted to rile him up a bit. My Friday is a bit slow. Ah well, back to my knitting....

I can assure you it was showing this morning when he first posted ๐Ÿ˜‰

Oooh, lovely!

Why would you want to rile someone up who's asking for help?

Deliberately no. But thanks
