Connects Roll Call

We have at least three different threads in play in which many freelancers take it as a given that 60 connects is nowhere near sufficient and many others can't imagine why and see that as a flaw in the complaining freelancers' process.

I'm in the "60 is plenty" camp, but I'm a writer...and I've noticed that many of the other supporters seem to be writers as well.

Possibly, the number of connects required to make a reasonable living varies by your area, depending on both the size/value of the typical job and the amount of competition.

Let's see if we can determine that. If you have a position on the Connects system, comment "Good" or "Bad" regarding the current system, along with which type of freelancer you are.

Good

Translator

I think 60 (read: 30 applications) is plenty. In the beginning I wasn't very selective, but nowadays I know what to look for when a client posts a job. I usually have around 8 or 10 connects left at the end of the work month.

For me 60 is enough, actually I don't even use all 60 not even 30 these days because I only apply for certain kind of jobs. However, I have seen some freelancers suggesting it should be decreased or Upwork should stop the free membership - I would not agree with both of them.

Bottomline - GOOD, and I am Translator.

When the connects system was first implemented, I was hardly using any.

Then as the site got worse and as I was getting hired less and less, I started using up most if not all my connects each month. (And I almost always only apply to jobs in the $$$ category - little good that does!)

I'm a writer, editor and proofreader. I think 60 connects is reasonable; I would not want more, nor would I want less.

*Edit: In my not so humble opinion, the current connects system is neither good nor bad.

Bad

Web Developer

If they don't want to offer more, either eliminate them completely, or charge per proposal to actually limit the competition as some people have suggested the 60 limit is currently doing. With the amount of freelancers x 30 proposals monthly, 60 connects limit is not making a difference at all IMO. Every project I am bidding on has 40-120 other bids on it.

A few writers / translators in another thread shot me down quite quickly when I expressed my opinion on this. I looked at a number of open projects that they would be qualified for, and most projects that hadn't been awarded that were sitting on page 30+ only had 20-27 bids on them. So yes, 60 connects should be just fine for these fields.

Good enough for me.
I'm a "top tier" Graphic Designer and UI Specialist. Not many jobs catch my eye, even when I'm desparate and go for the lower rate ones. Considering I get my 2 connects back when my proposal is decline, I always have some to spare.

Did you mean to say you'll get connects back when the job is closed?

If you're getting connects back when you're declined... I want in on that action!

A forum friend of mine and I had a bit of tiff over me saying he wouldn't get his connects back and he said he did.

When he tested out his theory, he found that he was not correct and was not happy.

It took a while, but we're on friendly terms now. Smiley Happy
