Connects should be returned if customer do not hire any one and job is archive

I make bids using 2 to 7 or 8 connects for many jobs, Hardly 1-2% clients respond now a days.

Most of the clients do not start communicate with any of freelancer.

And they do not hire any of the freelancer.

After a period of time job archived and our connects are lost.

I think most of the clients just post the job and forget or they are not interested anymore, but still they do not cancel the job may be due to lazyness or whatever.

I think bidding connects for such jobs must be returned / reversed to bidders at the time when job is archived.

Please raise your voice if you think I am right or you can correct me!!

You're absolutely right.

There are tons of posts like yours and everyone of them is right.

Hi Keshav,

We return Connects when a client closes their job without hiring or we find a job post has violated our Terms of Service. You can find more information here.

Submitting a proposal has a financial cost, just like the other expenses you incur as a freelancer running your own business. If a client never hires but doesnโ€™t close the job, your Connects are not returned. In this situation, we continue to encourage the client to hire or close the job, but ask that you consider the cost of Connects as part of your business expenses.

Then, why don't you guys close the job by yourself as you may have the authority? Instead of Archiving the job, just simply close it. Most of the clients are irresponsive and they forgot after posting the job. They will never close the job when you encourage them to close it. So, instead of this all, when the job is archived, you guys can simply close the job by yourself. This will help a lot of freelancers to save their money and also, it will be a great step to encourage freelancers, especially new ones.

How many different ways and times do people have to point out that freelancers having more connects is the very last thing anyone wants? It hurts clients, hurts Upwork, and hurts qualified freelancers.

Nothing you ever said makes any sense. How are clients benefiting from these scam jobs being posted on Upwork? How are professional freelancers going to benefit, when they are losing connects to these scams? The last time I checked, a client has options and if you are a professional at what you do, then you will definitely stand out. Again, no one said that Upwork should make connects cheaper and available to everyone. What we are simply saying is that Upwork must cancel a job if the client seems not interested in hiring anymore and return the connects to the freelancer so he can apply for a more serious job. This action won't deter potential clients, rather it will encourage clients who are serious about hiring on Upwork. What I can only derive from your statement is that of someone who is afraid of competition. Competition doesn't hurt Upwork or its clients, rather it benefits them. Clients get better services at reasonable prices while Upwork supply better services to its clientele.

How do you encourage clients to close their job? Do you (upwork) notify them to close their job?

It would be a great 'business expense' if not for a fact that so many of the so called 'job postings' on Upwork were scams.

But business expenses must be fair though right? We pay something to get something in return. Buying connects if completed is a business expense. But losing connects because of something that's not in our hands is considered as a loss. It really hurts who are just starting out. Your free connects are 10 per month but you have increased minimum connects required for a job upto 12, 16.

some time job is closed by upwork and upwork did not retuen any connect i face this issue many times in past.

Upwork want us to paying for lazyness of clients who do not close the job, though upwork can easily automate this process. But I donot know why upwork not willing to do this, only because of earning more profit and not thinking about freelancers and thier losses.

Due to this unfair policy of upwork people spent more than they earn.

Freelancers will be happy to pay if they earn something.

So far, in the previous 2 months, I earned 100$, and after the 10% fee, it remains 90, So, later I buy some connects and again give money to Upwork. How can this be a benefit for a freelancer who at the start of his career is earning 100$, and paying 50% to Upwork in the form of fees and buying connects? Kindly, take action against these Clients and also allow only those Clients to post job here who verify their account first and deposit money.

Hope this issue will be kept under consideration by Upwork.

Totally agreed.

You're not "giving" money to Upwork, you're purchasing a service. If that's not profitable for you, then the only sensible business decision is not to do it.

Keshav:  It ain't gonna happen.  This is also one of their revenue streams.  In the old days it was rather difficult to get upwork profile, but now it seems anyone cn be on upwork.  Most postings I see have 50 or so proposals.

Most of the new freelancers think that they will win job if they make lowest bid, but its not true. even if they win the bid they suffre losses ultimately.

We can see bids for same job ranging from $5 to $500, Amazing!!

I strongly agree with you.I also wonder why upwork is not understanding these concerns from their clients. Probably they want to just earn money by any means.

I wrote this message with my heavy heart. I hope Upwork sees my message. I am a new freelancer and apply for many jobs within 2 months but clients don't hire me. That's why I decided to boost my application so I can get hired but I lost my connect and my boosted connect too. So my appeal to upwork, please at least refund boosted connection, if client not hire any freelancer

thank you

The more connects floating around, the more competition you have. Do you really think having more people, apply for more jobs, and boost more is going to get you a job? It won't.

If you want to freelance, you need to start with your profile. Use a skill title, not a message. No one will ever find you in a search, guaranteed. Remove the "I'm an expert in." The client only sees the top line in a search, so make it great. Tell the client what you can do that is better than anyone else. Don't use greetings, names, or skills because the client see those in other places on your profile.

Remove all the emojis/graphics because it is not professional. There are way too many lists; take the information and form it into paragraphs. Also, in proposals, the client only sees the first two lines before deciding if they want to review it. Use the link at the top of the page to the Academy for more help.

Be selective with applying for jobs and using connects. If you don't have every requirement for the job, don't apply. If you don't have every requirement, and know you will be one of the top two, don't boost. How do you know? Do an honest assessment of your skills. Are you better than the rest? If not, don't boost.

Vetting clients and jobs is mandatory. You won't find any advice on Upwork, except from a very few freelancers, on the subject. You must assume every client is a scammer, until proven otherwise. Read this post to learn the Red Flags on Scams from community member Wes.

Excellent point raised, but I don't think it is in the interest of Upwork to cancel the jobs for several reasons.
1. The client (scam or not) has the right to decide when the job is concluded.

2. A large part of Upwork's revenue is from "credits." Returning them won't make any financial sense.

i agree with you dear i face this same issue many times.

I agree with you!! This has been a major problem for me as well. Even clients that have invited me first, which costs me no connects, have left jobs open for over a month, with no response or anything. Upwork, please penalize clients who are unresponsive and return connects! It's time-wasting, expensive in terms of unpaid time and effort, and unfair.

Real clients are few and far between. How does it benefit you to anger clients? There is no TOS violation in not hiring someone. I have been hired weeks after a client received 100+ proposals, and they were all garbage and unqualified for the job.

No one should get connects back, because they hurt you, too. Clients are receiving too many garbage and junk proposals. The more free connects, the more people will apply for jobs, increasing the number of irrelevant proposals, and ticking off the client.

There is no substitute for vetting. If the client and the job fail in any area, you do not apply, because you are wasting connect. If that means you don't find a job, and you don't apply, then you don't. What then? Do not depend on one source for income, and do not expect a platform will be "fair", a subjective concept.

Free connects floating around for everyone means the clients continue to receive mostly garbage proposals, and will not hire, and not return. Why would they? If you were a client and received dozens or hundreds of garbage proposals, with things like "hire me", or "I will do free work" or "I need job" or the always popular, mess of a chatbot proposal, what client will slog through garbage, to find your carefully crafted one?
