I'm new to Upwork.com and wouldike to know if it is customary for clients to request conversations through the app Telegram? Or is this possible spam?

It is very common but it is a scam. Don't do it.

Amy: These people are just trying to steal money from you.

It's a scam.

Also: It's a violation of Upwork ToS for you to communicate with prospective clients outside of the Upwork platform before being officially hired with an Upwork contract.

If you were caught communicating via Telegram with those people, before they hired you, then you could be suspended from Upwork.

As Preston said, these people who want you to go off-platform are thieves.

Not only do you lose hours, but you will also lose your money.

Go back and read the TOS and everything you can about Upwork functions.

If you have any questions or concerns, bring them to the community. There are

many experienced freelancers that will help you.

Never talk to any supposed client off-platform until the funding is verified and the contract is in place.
