Contract Suspended

I started an hourly contract and I have worked for over 12 hours. Now I have been informed that the contract is suspended as Upwork is carrying out an investigation. So what will happen to the 12 hours worked?  Will I be paid?

Hi there,

There are two reasons why your contract may be paused:

  • Your client has decided to pause your Hourly Contract: If no work needs to be done at the moment, clients can temporarily and immediately pause a contract. This prevents hours from being logged on the contract, without the need to end it, until you are ready to proceed with the next part of the project.
  • There is a problem with your client’s Upwork account: In this case, your contracts with them will be paused automatically and you cannot continue to bill that client through Upwork until the issue is resolved. There are many possible reasons this could occur, although we can’t share the specifics regarding your client’s account due to privacy concerns.

You can check out this help article to learn some tips on what you can do if your contract is paused.

Hi Theophilus,

Thank you for sharing your concern. I'd like to clarify that bonuses appear as Pending in the Transaction History when initiated by the client. Once the the payment has been successfully charged on the client's end, the date of availability will display next to the transaction. In case the payment is not successful, it will remain as Pending. There are many possible reasons this could occur, though we cannot share the specifics regarding your client’s account due to privacy concerns. It would be best to reach out to your client directly so they will be able to check their account and advise you accordingly. I would like to let you know as well that Bonus payments do not qualify for Upwork Hourly Protection.

Hi Teresa,

If there is an issue with your client’s Upwork account, they will be restricted, and your contract with them will be paused. You will not be able to continue to bill that client through Upwork until the issue is resolved. There are many possible reasons this could occur, though we cannot share the specifics regarding your client’s account due to privacy concerns. I have checked the account and would like to assure you that your client is already in correspondence with our team about their support ticket.

We advise that you wait for the hold on the contract to be lifted before taking any action or doing any additional work on the contract. For more information, please check out this help article.

My contract with my client was paused because apparently, there was a problem with his payment method. My client said the card was maxed out so he updated the payment method and paid the balance.

How long would it usually take for Upwork to resume the contract?

Hello Nobunito,

I am sorry to hear that your contract has been paused. I understand that your client has updated his billing method. Please know that if there is an issue with your client’s Upwork account, your contract with them will be paused and you will not be able to continue to bill that client through Upwork until the issue is resolved. There are many possible reasons this could occur, though we cannot share the specifics regarding your client’s account due to privacy concerns.

A few days ago my ongoing order was paused due to some problem with my client.

Still now, I have not yet received a response from the client and have already contacted Upwork support. I am concerned about the paused order and how it might affect my profile and future job opportunities. Could you please clarify if this will impact my ability to secure new orders?"

Hi Nipa,

Having a paused contract won't impact your ability to start new ones. If there is an issue with your client’s Upwork account, your contract with them will be paused and you will not be able to continue to bill that client through Upwork until the issue is resolved.

Greetings,

My name is Ebenezer and I'm new to Upwork. I landed a job and worked for some hours. I check the timesheet but reads 0 hrs workd. It's a contract that's paid hourly. Do I need to log my work time manually? Also what happens when the client pause the contract.

Best,

Ebenezer

Hi Ebenezer,

When working on hourly contracts, you will need to download and use the Upwork Time Tracker AppWhen you have logging turned on, the app takes random screen captures six times per hour — once per 10-minute billing segment. Anything visible on your screen will display in your Work Diary. You can choose whether you want to be notified each time a screen capture is taken. By default, notifications are on and you’ll have the option to remove the screen capture before upload if you’d like to. You may also remove screen captures from your Work Diary until the end of the weekly billing cycle.

Please check this help article for steps on how you can download the Upwork Time Tracker AppI also encourage you to check out the Upwork Academy courses to help you become successful on Upwork

Hi Joanne P,

I did not use the time tracker so did not log time. Now the client paused the contract and he is unreachable. I can see that on my timesheet it only states the time the contract started. Does it mean that I won't get paid?  Is there a way I can be assisted? What step should I take when the client pause the contract?

Hi Ebenezer,

This is Ronna, stepping in for Joanne. I would like to clarify that with hourly contracts, you'll need to log time using the desktop so that clients will be billed automatically at the end of the work week.

I would like to let you know as well that clients can pause contracts any time they want to put work on hold. They may need to do this for many reasons. This pause prevents you from logging time on the contract until the client is ready to start again. In most cases, they’ll message you to explain why they paused the contract and when they plan to restart it. If you don’t hear from the client, you can contact them to ask why they paused the contract and when they plan to restart. You can learn more by visiting this helpful page
