I had a brief writing contract with a client back in June, 2019. Since then, even though the contract finished, I've received frequent messages that the contract is on hold, then it's OK, and then it's on hold again. It's annoying as I haven't had any contact with this client for more than a year!

Is the contract still open? If it is, that's why. It's happened to me too on an old contract that I must get around to closing.

Probably an expired credit card. I just got notification that I had to update my client account CC because the credit card is expiring. So apparently, even though I am not using the client account and I have no contracts open, my client account will be suspended if I don't keep an active CC on it. Great cybersecurity, Upwork, considering I'd like to let the card expire to keep my financial accounts protect when you get hacked.
Soo, anyway, yeah I learned this week that this could be why contracts that are years old go on hold even though the client is not active.
