Hi there
I agreed a contract with my client for a fixed price of USD 180 for a total order of 4 hours. I fulfilled my contract in full and delivered the 4 hours of audio work on time. The first milestone was set by the client at USD 45 (which corresponds to 1 hour of audio recordings). He told me that I should please understand if he insists on changes as a precautionary measure because the recordings are only checked by QA. But Upwork would pay out after 14 days anyway. After a while I asked what the status was. He told me that the first round of QA had been completed. I then asked again after a few days and found that Upwork had suspended the contract. Upwork told me to contact the client directly. The client told me not to worry, he would take care of it or open a new contract with me. I then wrote to him again via "Submit work for review" and asked him to release the payment now. I can no longer write messages to the customer because Upwork has excluded him from the conversation. Now I have tried to manage the remaining milestones so that the amount of 180 USD can be paid out, but that is not possible in the program. Today I then requested another request for payment for the entire amount of 180 USD and not just the first milestone of 45, because I delivered everything and thus fulfilled the contract.
Is it possible that I will now only receive the 45 USD and the rest is lost? I was not able to contact the customer again.
Thank you for your help
Kind regards
S. Marte

As per my experience, you'll receive 45 USD only, but no need to dishearten. You'll learn online working, part of freelancing.
The thing is, always check client work history and how he communicate with other freelancers on his past projects. Most of the time, you'll get an idea about the client. I am not saying every client is a problem but there are few and, may be, there is issue for client working online platform for the firsttime. The new client has to face many issues while awarding the job, transaction, quality and deadline etc. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your message. I think I made a beginner's mistake, but it's a lesson learned and it won't happen to me again. The customer had been a member of Upwork for many years and his reviews were good, and he also has several open orders according to the information in Upwork.

If the client only funded $45, then that's all you can get - promises don't matter and can't be enforced by Upwork. If the client set a milestone for one hour of work, then you should only have done one hour of work, not four hours.
Some clients will lie and scam and take advantage of you if you don't learn how to use Upwork properly and stand up for yourself at all times; there's plenty of information available if you click on the "Academy" link at the top of this page - I suggest that you go through all of it before you send any more proposals.
