I have a previous client that I have worked with twice already. I love that she keeps inviting me to more of her jobs, but I'm wondering if I have to make a fancy cover letter every time? She already knows my experience and skills from the first cover letter I ever sent her and I don't want to appear redundant or like I'm sucking up to her to get the job. What types of things do you put in cover letters for previous clients, or how do you go about structuring those letters?
I've just been keeping it brief by thanking her, telling her I would have a quick turnaround time like usual, and that I always enjoy working with her. Any thoughts?

It's more likely that it's not you, but rather her. She doesn't even realize what she's doing. Many clients find Upwork's interface byzantine. Clients don't realize that if they are opening a job publicly when they've already decided who will do the work that many freelancers lose resources bidding in vain. And Upwork doesn't care of course.
You could try softly asking her after the next time you win a job if she intended to post it publicly. She probably didn't.
In the meantime you probably need a slightly more formal tone than I suggested. Keep it on familiar terms (this IS a past client) but be sure to check all the boxes on whatever she needs done.

Might just be me but I don't write a cover letter at all in these circumstances. I treat it the same way as if a past client called me on the phone. Ballpark: "Hi (name), good to heaer from you. Sounds like a good project, I should be able to help you, when would you like to discuss it further?"
Of course sometimes I have to tell the client I can't do the work, for whatever reason.
Seems to me you are handling it right.
The only exception would be if it's a totally new area or the client has told you that he/she is opening it up to public bidding for some reason.

Thank you! I appreciate the input. However, I guess I should have mentioned that she does open it to the public for other proposals as well, but then invites me to apply. She did this last time and I had the same response as I mentioned above, and she gave me the job last time. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right based on the job being opened up to others, though.

Thank you. I appreciate all your help! I'm assuming that is the case as well since I got the job again...
