Did something change with the way clients contact freelancers?

I received a message about three weeks ago from someone who invited me to work on a new website that is similar to Upwork. The person told me they invite only top freelancers with outstanding work history from oDesk and they wanted me to consider the job opportunity I was given.

I was very confused who the sender was because it wasn't a client with prior contact history, and it was not a normal job invitation; it came as a message through oDesk's message system. I clicked on the link to check out the website and it was indeed similar to Upwork. I even recognized a Swedish translator who works on Upwork so I thought this had something to do with the new website. So many things are going on lately with the oDesk/Upwork switch and new features/changes/metrics, I have lost track on how things work lately.

My initial thought was that this message was sent to me by an oDesk staff member. I replied and thanked for the invitation and asked if this had something to do with new website for oDesk/Upwork. I decided to contact Customer Support as well, just in case. The support rep informed me that this was not an oDesk staff member and that they would remove the message from my inbox. I was also told that clients have an option to reach out to freelancers by sending a message to their profile page.

My profile has always been set to "oDesk users only" because I don't want to be contaced by people outside oDesk/Upwork. The only change I made was about a week ago when I changed my availabilty status to "not available for new work" because I am swamped with work right now.

My question is, did something change with the way clients contact freelancers? I have never experienced this before. My concern is that I will need to change my availability status back to "Upwork users only" at some point, and I don't want to be contacted by new clients without a prior job invitation because I want to know who the client is and see their work history. I choose my clients wisely and I don't want any spam in my inbox.

That's very strange. Is it against forum rules to post the link of that similar site here?

I can't post the link because it's a competitor to Upwork. It's against the Community Guidelines:

"The following are violations that may result in immediate post removal, warning, board sanction and/or suspension from the site:

3. Including your own or another person or company's contact information and/or email address in a post for any purpose."

Well, what I remember is that there was a post (I can't find it) and someone was contacted by some guy who claimed to be someone from oDesk/client  success matching or something like that, so the OP(again, I can't remember who that was) asked does that person really work for oDesk or not.

I remember that the mod answered and said that that person indeed works for oDesk, which  really surprised me. But if they do have some program like that in place, it should be more transparent because they leave a lot of space for scammers to represent themselves as oDesk support specialist or whatever.

I don't think  it is the same thing in your case though, because they wouldn't  redirect you to the other platform.

I actually asked the same question to the person who contacted me because I was confused whether this person was a client or an Upwork staff member. When I contacted Customer Support, I asked the rep if they can use a badge or something to avoid any confusion in the future. The support rep told me that when we are contacted by Upwork, it's either through the help and support page or via our email that is linked to our oDesk/Upwork account. They never contact us through Upwork's message system.

Which brings me back to my concern. I really don't want messages from new clients without a prior job inviation. It would be a nightmare to have the inbox flooded with messages by people we don't know anything about.

I am very surprised to hear about the oDesk person you mentioned. I agree with you, I don't think this is the same thing as in my case, but I would definitely like to know if this is true.
