Does this request represent Asking for Free Work?

After presenting a PDF of an Excel financial model for a real estate modeling job- I received this:

"Can you please provide me with a detailed sample Model of a Multi-Family Acquisition, and then lets set up a time to discuss"

Answer: "Sure, Fred, that is a great idea. Why don't you set up a contract for me to create the detailed sample Model for you, it should take me no more than X hours to get this done for you, and then we can take it from there."

Petra,

You always nail it - thank you.

I did something similar -- and he persisted, so I just flat out told him: I'm concerned that you are seeking free work from me - his response: "asking for sample of past work is not asking for free work" -- "well you have a sample of my work in this area - as a PDF, but you want a detailed model, which makes me suspicious".  He then dropped the insults - so I reported him.

Thanks again.

Mark

A good of the work I do involves financial models.

Honest clietnts don't expect freebies. There's no reason to give away a usable model that a potential client can easily convert to her own use without needing you, but there are ways to make a model unusable to the extent it would be better for the client to get you to create a usable version.

Password-protect significant portion of the file, send a model that reflects your modeling skills in a completely different industry, change a large number of cells from calculations to hard numbers, delete certain sections completely, etc.

Thank you Will,

Great suggestion --

Re. Password Protection However: perhaps you may wish to rethink doing that, as Excel is not at all a secure application.  Timebombs, password protects and all other manner of attempting protections can be easily bypassed.  The only secure Excel file is the file in your firewall-protected PC hard drive!!
