Doing work before hire

A potential client just ask if I want to do a project before hiring me. When I said no, she said so many freelancers prefers that to see if it;s a good match.  Oh, and she also started the convo by asking me about paying through Paypal.

Have you EVER heard of a freelancer who wanted to work before getting hired. I told her to go away. Do you agree with my gut feelings?

Virginia, I agree with you 100%. The client just wants you to work for free or off platform, so just tell the client to interview one of the many freelancers who supposedly work before being hired.

 Yes, That, (asking for free work) and telling a freelancer about payment off site is against Upwork's TOS. If you agree to that, you will not get paid for the work you do. and if you accept payment offsite your Upwork account will be suspended.

I agree. Everyone is so careful to HAVE a contract. She's done hundreds of jobs. I wonder how many stories like this she's pulled.

I think those freelancers all live in the same village as the clients who want to pay freelancers for not doing any work.

LOL. Birds of feather. Actually, her reasoning was that she was doing me a favor by saving me the fee. Jeez. Do I look stupid?
