Hi, after trying to enter my Spanish and get declined, I do some research here in the forum and in the Tax Agency web in Spain and I noticed the Help page Info is not correct and can lead to misunderstanding on why your VAT is not working.
As I read in here, https://community.upwork.com/t5/Freelancers/VAT-number-for-Spain/td-p/280160, before enter your VAT you need to check in you it can be verified on VIES (https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/) , otherwise Upwork will no approved you number.
But what not is explained in the Upwork Help article, and what I found is what people is always asking, is that the spanish national VAT number is actually not working most of the times, because, and I quote from the VIES web:
"Some Member States / Northern Ireland require an additional registration for intra-EU transactions and record in their national VIES databases only such VAT numbers; therefore, it is possible that a VAT number, even if correct, will not be validated through VIES, because the owner of that VAT number is not involved in intra-EU transactions or did not register for that purposes with his/her tax administration"
I think you you add the above info to this list, mentioning specifically that some countries requier additional registration in order to be validated by VIES.
If your VAT number was declined, it was likely because:
- The country on VAT ID doesn’t match the country on your Upwork profile
- The name on VAT ID doesn’t match the name on your Upwork profile
- Your VAT ID is expired
- Your VAT information was entered in an invalid format (check correct format for your country)
