Fake jobs. Fake US-based freelancers. That's just Monday at Upwork.

Hi, why does it feel like most jobs on upwork are fake posts? Even verified clients neer seem to hire - jobs remain open forever. Is this a scam? Honestly asking.

There are certainly scam clients here, but they tend to hire people and THEN scam them. What kind of a scam would involve posting a fake job and then doing nothing about it? Or if you're asking whether Upwork themselves are posting fake jobs - then no, they're not.

Cool

I think the problem begins with assuming that a post is a "job." Prospective clients come to Upwork and post about a task or project they want a professional to help them complete. Then, freelancers submit proposals explaining how they can help. The proposal is actually an offer of assistance with the stated problem.

There's no "fake job" because unless you submit a proposal that convinces someone that you can solve their problem, there's no further discussion. No one is promising anyone a job when they create a post explaining their problem and ask for bids to solve it. That is the way this marketplace works.

There are other marketplaces that work differently, which is why it may be confusing. Far too many freelancers assume that the fact that a prospect requests information guarantees that the prospect will convert into a client. At best, you are purchasing connects to have the opportunity to make your pitch to a warm lead. And, just like any other sales funnel, a lot of prospects that appear to be good leads will turn out to be just gathering information and never convert.
