Hello, Odesk community. I was wondering if you all have any advice about how to write fiction samples. Can you give me information regarding word count, where to start story, etc.

Are you asking about samples for your portfolio or has a client asked for samples? Either way, you should be thinking about the job - or jobs - you want and how your samples will prove that you can do it/them. In terms of word count, where to start story, etc. - put yourself in the place of the client and aak ourself what the client would want to see. Consider how much time clients have. If a client has asked you to write samples, make sure you get paid for this.

As a writer hoping to go professional, you should already have a decent portfolio ready at your disposal. Make sure you have lots of different styles eg. different genres, short stories, extracts of longer pieces etc. That way you can just grab what you need and show off to prospective clients the range of your ability.
