Hey good people, PLEASE stop sending free work to you potential clients.
We're (I am, guessing not alone) bored flagging clients for 'asking free work'. They (clients) are doing so out of ignorance. Us (freelancers) know.
Just stop.
In addition - explain your potential clients that you (freelancer) are unable to work without a contract in place.
Very often happens that you (freelancer) WILL "get" that job just by doing so. You'll win.

Samples aren't the same as free work. If I've produced something in the past that shows I can do the work required by the client, I'll sent it to them to prove I'm capable of taking on their job.
Free work is obviously something else. Had a client ask for a free trial last week even after I'd sent samples. I told them where to go
