Fruad client - *Edit*

Hello Everyone,

I am really very happy getting my first assignment in Upwork.

I was given files and instruction through Skype with an email id to forward my completed job. Please check the attachment for details.

After approval, hardwork of 10 days and submission of assignment, I was assured of payment within 2 day of billing cycle as wednesday and even asked to proceed with next assignment, but after waiting for a week , client asked for more work without payment.  when I conveyed that as per rule of billing , first I need to be billed for my first assignment, he simply blocked me from skype.

I am very much upset , I feel there should not be any unverified clients in Upwork, where we like simple people get cheated.

I know, I cannot get back my labour and time I spent last days, but just wanted to make an awareness for others that there are clients who are fruad please be alert verify and goahead with contract.

Please check the attachment of our skype conversation.

Upwork there was someone named **Edited for Community Guidelines**, skype there was someone named **Edited for Community Guidelines** and gmail someone else.

Here we are all pure professional and needy, no one should be given rights to play with our tolerance.

Action should be taken for clients as such. As mentioned and reported by freelancer of fruad , these clients should be removed and kicked out of this trusted site.

Looks like you worked without being hired.

It is almost impossible to not get paid if YOU play by the rules. You didn't, so you worked for free.

And by agreeing / asking  to be paid "directly to your account" and posting the evidence you have risked being suspended and banned from Upwork.

If you agree to be paid outside the Upwork platform you are defrauding Upwork.

In future, NEVER do any work unless you are hired ON UPWORK with a contract and funded milestone (if fixed price)

You did this to yourself, and can easily avoid it by sticking to the rules in future.

Will you be banned?

That is something that has been discussed a little bit... whether or not newbie freelancers should be banned when they work without a contract.

Technically a freelancer is violating Upwork rules when they do this, but in practice, Upwork has been very merciful in how they handle freelancers in this situation. We have not seen freelancers be banned for this.

But there should be more discussion on this topic. It may be a helpful improvement to ban or suspend freelancers who are caught working without a contract.

 IF she were suspended it would NOT be for working without a contract, but for asking to be paid directly outside of Upwork.

Hi Sasmita,

The client account you are referring to has already been suspended. In the future, please make sure you have a contract in place before you start working on the project.

I will make sure hereafter, to follow the Upwork rules inorder to accept a work/contract , verify appropriate client.

I will never repeat this mistake again.

There are many unverified clients - usually brand new clients- whose accounts are not verified. In fact I've had several jobs with those very same clients. The only difference is that I do NOT start work until they ARE verified. People only get cheated because they , for whatever reason, don't take the time to read forum messages or the TOS of the site they are using. They just do not realize that they are working with a STRANGER, on the INTERNET that they JUST met and could be from ANYWHERE in the world.  Sorry, it's a freelancers business to know things that would affect their business. and the procedures of a site such as this. And it may sound harsh, but if they don't take that time, then it's their own fault.

Unfortunately it will be rare that you will make a new freelancer aware of this scam. The majority of new freelancers will only become aware when they get scammed. There are hundreds of posts on here, - in fact there are several A DAY that post messages such as yours for the various scams that are done here over and over and over. Yet, you were not aware.

If you don't give these scammers their "rights" then they won't have those rights.

Action IS taken for clients (scammers). They are removed and suspended from this site. You need to report them in order for that to happen. And if new freelancers didn't fall victim to these scammers because they knew what to look out for, there wouldn't be so many taking advantage of SO MANY freelancers.
