Getting invites from questionable clients...

I received two job invites in the past week. I applied to the first one, and later noticed that the client has sent it to more than 50 people, and felt it was pointless to have wasted my time and connects on it. The client did not respond.

For the second invite, I now knew to check the job post in detail before sending a proposal. There were 100+ invites sent, and 50+ Unanswered invites.

These type of clients and invites are best ignored right? A waste of time, and probably a scam or some other information gathering tactic...

If I continue to receive such invites regularly (my profile visibility has gone up dramatically in the past 2 weeks, Thank you Upwork algorithm!), should I just ignore them? I do not want to spoil my Stat of responsing to all invites within 24 hours, in case I do get invites for genuine clients and good projects.

Bilal, I live off invitations as the only means to connect with clients over here.

The jobs that have loads of invitations come from two sources: either the client is hoping to get "the best deal" out of this platform and therefore send tons of invitations (no go!) or the Talent Specialists have gone wild (again... they can send dozens of invitations without asking the client).

Either case, skip the jobs that have lots of invitations and focus on those clients who only invite a couple of freelancers. Those are the good ones! 🤑

PS. I witnessed a job post with a record-breaking amount of 2,865 invitations earlier this year! 😜 I had 2,865 reasons for skipping it. 😉 Those we just flag as spam and move on.

You don't get charged any connects when you respond to an invite

No. Decide whether to apply or decline. Don't ingnore.

Thank you Petra,

Didn't know that we don't lose connects on responding to invites.

I will either accept or reject invites and not ignore them.

BIlal,

Many of my Upwork contracts come from clients who contact me. I don't recommend ignoring invitations as long as at least a few of them turn out to be good clients.

Thank you Will.

I will keep that in mind, and go through each invitation. Looking to get a long-term client soon.

Thank you Mikko,

I will decline the ones with tons of invites. And focus on the ones which have less.

Hope I keep getting the invites though. 🙂

If the job  is perfect for your skills and the budget is right then go ahead and apply.  It costs you nothing.  Who cares if there are 50 proposals submitted?  If you're the right fit you'll stand out.

I've often been hired out of 50 proposals it's not impossible.  Reach for the stars and hopefully find the long term client you're seeking.

Thank you Julie. That's a good way to look at it.

I know what you're saying, and I have applied to a few jobs which already had 50+ proposals, thinking that I am a perfect fit and who knows, the client might like my proposal/profile.

Trying to reach for the stars...

Stars, blahhh... Anyone can get that. 😉

Reach for coconuts, that's the correct approach. 😋:desert_island:😆

Oh, yes, Apologies.

🙂

I would've given you a coconut for that comment. But a Kudos will have to do...
