I just came across a freelancer whose rate was 30 cents per hour. How the hell am I supposed to compete with that?

Why are you considering someone whose rate is $.30/hr your competition? Does he/she have the same skills that you have and can deliver work with the same quality as yours?

i agree, anyone who is charging that little then their quality of work is equal to their rate. people want to go on about prices others charge but it has nothing to do with price when someone does not care about quality. yes we can all buy a $1 tshirt that will not last 3 washes in the machine.. you get what you pay for. in my field i have found that often job are posted on multiple sites giving clients more choice to shop around.
