Have I been scammed?

Hello,

I accepted an offer last week to transcribe some files for a client. She sent three files to me even before I got the job. She said one was a sample to access how good I am. I transcribed it and sent it to her and she offered me the job afterwards.

The client then asked me to transcribe the remaining two files which I did and submitted. I noticed as soon as she got both files, she stopped responding to my messages. I sent her a message a few minutes ago because I noticed she was online, but it appears she went offline as soon as she received it.

What should I do?

Hi Maryann,

If the escrow was funded then you don't need to worry. you will be paid after 14 days even if your client doesn't response.

I would suggest you to wait; sometimes some clients take time to approve the work.

Alright thanks, I was worried because we were communicating often, but she stopped as soon as I submitted the last file.

If the client officially hired you though this site and not just said, you're hired, AND if they funded escrow, then no you haven't been scammed  The client may be reviewing your work, Something may have come up, etc. The funds will automatically be released after about 14 days.

Maryann,

Some community forum members are worried you may have been scammed by this client because an honest client would not have asked you to do the first of three transcriptions for free.

If this client paid you for two of the three, then that's better than nothing. Definitely.

But a genuinely honest client would have paid you for all three.

A scammer would have TOLD you that you were hired, and tricked you into providing the 2nd and 3rd transcriptions for free without ever actually having an Upwork contract with you.

Ok, thanks I feel much better

Hi Maryann,

If the job you're referring to is an Hourly job that you've logged in a few hours this week, this is not a scam. Please read more about the weekly billing cycle for Hourly contracts and I strongly suggest you follow up on a message you sent to this client earlier.

You can also find more details about working and getting paid on Hourly jobs in these Help articles: here, here and here.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I put in to work for a data filing company and they sent me a contract and interviewed me on line and sent a check I of $1965 i deposited it to see if it would go through to buy software I needed they said. Then they had me deposit it in a different bank. I got so nervous when sent me another I went to the bank to deposit it in person and they said it was fake I filed a report with my bank and the other bank... If anyone knows what else I do or help for feature job offeres

Danna,

Yes, this is the classic scam.

This has been around longer than the Internet.

In the future, don't fall for scams. Especially scams that are older than your great-grandparents.

If anybody offers you a check, it's a scam. And it is a violation of Upwork's most sacred rule. Upwork can terminate your account for accepting money outside of the platform, and that includes checks.

But what if they're a Nigerian prince?  I mean they're royalty, so they have to be trustworthy, right?

Danna, Preston is right. Next time don't get involved with anyone who offers to give you funds outside upwork.

- Or anyone wanting you to interview on Google+ Hangouts.

That seems to be the latest trend for scammers on here.

If people would take the time to read the TOS the scammers would never get to the step of mailing the check.

Hi Danna,

I'm sorry you found yourself in such unfortunate situation. I've checked your proposals but couldn't positively identify the job in question, since you communicated with the client off the platform. Please submit a Support request and share screenshots of your communication with the client, in order for our team to review and take actions against the client's account.

In the future, please make sure you don't start working with a client unless you have an active contract with them, their payment method is verified and a Milestone is funded if it's a Fixed-Price contract. You should only receive payments through Upwork, as paying, receiving payment, requesting and accepting to be paid outside Upwork is against our ToS and carries a penalty for all parties involved.

To help you work safely on Upwork, please have a look at tips and warning signs shared in this thread. Here are a few other resources I'm sure you'll find very useful:

How do I request I'm so new I don't know how?

Click on the support request link that Vlad provided in his reply.

From there, you can ask support to review the job posting by reporting it as a scam.  Make screenshots of your conversation with the scammers (I'm assuming you chatted with them on Hangouts or Yahoo Messenger) and attach them to your support request.

If you have a link to the job posting, be sure and include that, as well.

Thank you will do
