How do we get the states our clients are from?

I recently learned that some states require out-of-state freelanceres to file state taxes on earnings from that state. California and New York, for example. Do we have to ask the clients which state they are in or is there some report? I haven't found anything yet.

I file my taxes using TurboTax for small business, both state and federal returns.  Never has a question popped up asking what state my freelance income was originated from.

That may not be enough.

California courts upheld a ruling that gives CA the right to tax out-of-state freelancers for work where the benefit was received in CA.

Here's a Reddit post with a discussion of the matter. https://www.reddit.com/r/freelance/comments/dynw8c/all_freelancers_with_clients_in_california_now/

It looks like we can write contracts that state the benefit is being received in our own state, but I would need to consulte with a CPA or attourney to be sure.
