How do you set up X Lite SoftPhone to call overseas?

Hello there! Can someone please help me with this issue?

You see, I'm trying to set up an X lite Softphone so I can apply to positions where I can do cold calling and appointment setting...but to be really honest I have no idea how to do this.

I have downloaded the X lite softphone and I know I need an Voice Over IP. Can it be from any company or does it have to be local?

I feel weird asking this but please help a freelancer out! I will really appreciate it alot...
