1) Write a compelling, stand-out profile

2) Only apply to jobs that are a good fit 

3) Respond to jobs with a thoughtful, customized proposal

4) Be responsive (to invites, clients)

5) Follow-up with previous clients as a possible resource for more work (not too often - 1x every 3-4 months)

The only thing I would add is attention is a precious commodity. If you have a clients attention don’t waste it. Tell them what they need to know quickly and impactfully. If you want to be engaged you have to be engaging.
