I know that Upwork debits my account monthly. I need to give a refund to a client and I don't have an available balance. I expected they would just bill me. Is that not possible?

Patricia, you have to contact Support to arrange for a transfer of funds into your Upwork balance, which you can then refund to the client. That's in addition to what Jennifer said (refunding when you have pending funds.)

If you work often, you can just use money in the Pending section of your reports. Of course, you'd have to wait until money moved to Pending.
