When I click the link it takes me off the Upwork site so I stopped and messaged them we needed to stay on the Upwork site. Does this sound legit?

There is nothing wrong with Gofile (a file sharing service) or with following (safe) links. You are just not allowed to communicate with prospective clients outside the platform until a contract is in place.

That said: Any unsolicited invite as a US based newbie is likely a scam, so proceed with extreme caution. Check if the client has any history on Upwork, if they have a veryfied payment method.Not everyone with no history and no verified payment method is a scammer, but just about every scammer has no history and no verified payment method.
