I've been treated unfair and I want to address the issue

I am writing this post as a last resort to seek assistance from the Upwork Community and Upwork Customer Service. Let me provide some context about myself. From the summer of 2019 until mid-December last year, I was a part of the Top Wikipedia Freelancers list on Upwork (https://www.upwork.com/hire/wikipedia-freelancers/). During that time, I completed over 500 projects, achieved Top Rated Plus Status, and maintained an average rating of 99-100, which I still have. It took me years of hard work, resilience, and determination to earn that status. If you check my profile, you will see that almost all of my clients' reviews are 5-stars, with many praising my dedication.

Over time, my reputation and brand were established, and clients approached me based on my reviews and rating, as well as the Upwork algorithms that noted my success and kept me in the top ratings. On December 14, I was in the second place of the first row, climbing the top ladder each month. Upwork was an excellent platform for me, and I paid over 100k in commissions to the platform, making our collaboration very beneficial for both of us.

Furthermore,  I've been a dedicated partner of Upwork for years and I literally helped hundreds of clients with how Upwork's system works (many clients were very disoriented at the beginning.

However, on December 15, my account was suspended, with the reason being that my Upwork profile contained statements against another person, business, or entity that were considered defamatory, which is against Upwork's Terms of Service. All I did was place a warning on my profile not to deal with the clones of Wikipedia, while I NEVER PUT ANY PARTICULAR NAME OF ANY WEBSITE OR PERSON ON MY PROFILE. Upwork could have simply notified me to remove the note, and I would have complied. But instead, they punished me severely. I didn't attack any website or name, yet the consequences of the suspension, which lasted only 3-4 days, were disastrous for my career and reputation.

Here are the consequences of the suspension:

  1. I lost my status on the list of the "Top Wikipedia Freelancers," which resulted in a 90% decrease in clients. It's as if I had just started here three years ago. My profile statistics DO NOT SHOW any suspension in the last 90 days, so I believe there was a terrible mistake.
  2. I have been honoring old contracts, with a few exceptions of new ones, but I have become irrelevant on Upwork. All of my work here seems to have been in vain.

When I tried to explain the situation to Upwork Customer Service, they didn't give me a clear explanation. It seems like I'm at the mercy of the Upwork Automatic Algorithms. I feel like a small man against the SYSTEM. No one wants to help me. I believe that a great injustice was done to me and my hard work, and I am frustrated and desperate. I have lost all motivation to work because it seems that my hard work for many years is not being rewarded. I feel like a small cog in a huge machine, where no one wants to understand my situation or help me. I am considering whether to continue on Upwork or look for another venue in my career.

If anyone can help me with my situation, I would greatly appreciate it. I do not want to demotivate people here on Upwork, but this is a terrible situation that brought me to write this post. I have a few questions:

  1. For how long will I be kept away by the Upwork algorithms?
  2. Is there anyone who can help me with that?
  3. How do I appeal, as I believe I was punished inadequately and without good cause, where the representative could have just warned me to remove a general note?
  4. In a nutshell:
For the last 3 and half years I've been literally living on Upwork, working 80-90 hours a week, including the weekends to build my reputation and brand and climb on the Top List of Wikipedia Freelancers.
And that all been erased for what? A small notice to clients with a very general warning to be cautious? Does it sound fair  to anyone?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

I would really appreciate it if you can help me with that. Looking forward. Still didn't get any email or notification. All I want is justice.

We are all at the mercy of Upwork's algorithms. I've received hardly any invitations in the past few months, and I haven't had any problems or suspensions. I very much doubt that anyone has decided to punish you; it's just become a lot tougher for many freelancers now.

Vyacheslav,

Upwork has their terms, conditions and policies, and if violated--even when you don't believe you committed an offense--they have every right to suspend your account.

However, I agree with you. In my opinion, a Top-Rated Plus freelancer should get a private warning before an all-out suspension is imposed. If I were a Top-Rated Plus freelancer, I would certainly appreciate that.

As Christine said, what's happening with your account is probably not related to the suspension or punishment. There have been algorithm adjustments and many freelancers, even Top-Rated and Top-Rated Plus, are affected.

It's understandable when motivation fades. Other freelancers here can provide insight, tips, and opinions, but the best motivation comes from within. You have to find a reason to continue.

Since Arjay has shared your report with the Upwork team, mayby they will re-evaluate your situation and restore anything you may have lost. But I'm afraid the slow down in profile views, job hires, and invites, is being experienced by many, if not most, freelancers and it doesn't appear to be changing any time soon.

Unfortunately, it is not the case. I was on the list of top freelancers on Wikipedia for 3 years and I was removed right after the temporary suspension. There cannot be any coincidence here and the Upwork Customer Service did recognize the issue when I tried to appeal but never helped me with anything on that matter. I hope my letter of frustration will somehow help to review my case.

Vyacheslav,

You have had more new projects this year than 99% of the freelancers on the site. You are doing excellent especially since your profile is not following the new 2023 Upwork algorithm rules below:

PROFILE: Always complete your Upwork Profile before applying for Jobs. Create a synergized Title, Summary, and Skills to apply for Jobs to match what Clients are searching for. Use one or two of the Skill keywords in the Title to emphasize what you bring to the table for the Client. Create 4 short paragraphs in the Summary. If the Summary is too long, most Clients will not read the rest of the Summary; too short then there isn't enough information for a Client to hire. The first two sentences of the Summary are the most important because they are visible to the client as they search for a freelancer. Use all 15 Skills IF they apply. The Skills are used to assist a Client in locating your Profile via search. Add your Portfolio and always use a colorful image. Consider adding a Project Catalog if it applies. Use a short sentence description for each Employment entry. By the way, it goes without saying make sure that your Profile Settings are on Public not Private so others can view the Profile.

This is not my point. My point is that I was on the Top Wikipedia Freelancer's list for 3 years and I made it through a very hard work - not a luck or something else. Even now I don't have any "suspension record" for the last 90 days but I was taken down from the list after that controversial incident. The point is that the work and reputation building of several years was deleted by one click and it means I was treated like "nobody" in this system. No personal touch or human consideration.

I also wrote that I never mentioned any specific name of any website when warning my clients and a short note for the top plus freelancer would be enough for me to understand and remove even this innocent notice.

The problem is that working hard for 3 years ALL GONE IN VAIN.

Vyacheslav,

Just curious how does one get themselves on their respective Upwork freelancer list?

What exactly did you do to get on the list?

I would love to know how to get on my Category list especially since I have $900,000 in revenues and 350 completed Jobs.

I thought those lists in 2023 were random?

Arjay your thoughts also would be appreciated.

Well, it is all about relevance and your industry I guess. Upwork has just a few good and trusted Wikipedia specialists and I assume that I'm one of them. All my 555 projects are Wikipedia related (almost all completed with 5 stars reviews. This is an extremely complex industry. I got on the list by the summer of 2019 and was there until December 15, 2022. Removed from the list after a temporary suspension of 3 days (and this doesn't even appear on my "suspensions statistics" - still "0" suspensions.

This makes me think they somehow tweaked with my statistics and I was removed from the list. And never got back.

Where is this "list"? Are you talking about your placement in the search results?

Yes, Christine. I'm talking about this:

https://www.upwork.com/hire/wikipedia-freelancers/

Those results are rotated and you can't see more names unless you're logged in as a client; it doesn't mean that you've been punished. There's no way to get to the top of the list and then stay there.

You might be happy to know that I went into my client account just now and did a search for "Wikipedia Experts", and there were hundreds of matches. Your name came up 8th on the very first page!

Thank you, and it is very kind of you. Unfortunately, the harm was made and there is an ongoing investigation now on what happened to my profile initiated by Arjay.

Well, it is a follow up on my previous post here:

https://community.upwork.com/t5/Freelancers/I-ve-been-treated-unfair-and-I-want-to-address-the-issue...

They indeed sent my request and I got the answer today that the incident in December (a suspension for 3 days) caused the Upwork Algorithms to remove me from the list of Top Wikipedia Freelancers where I had been for 3 years. And they cannot do anything now because this is how algorithms work. So, they recognized that human factor played a role from knocking me out from the list but Upwork Algorithms cannot be changed and this means - I'm a small cog against THE SYSTEM.  They said that if I continue to work hard then maybe Algorithms will get me back one beautiful day.  So, However, I now came to conclusion that my work of 3 years was reduced to 0. And I lost all my motivation to conitnue as it doesn't look that hard work is rewarded here.

I have only one question to the members of the Upwork: did anything like this happen to anyone before:

1) Working for years and being for years on the Top List of Freelancers in any specific industry

2) Then losing it all because of one incident.

3) Then "one beautiful day" gettting back on the top list?

I'm asking in order to make a decision on whether to continue on Upwork platform or simply look for another venue in my career. I feel treated like I'm "nobody" here.   Looking forward to your answers, friends!
