I want to use Time Tracker on a Fixed Price Job

I would like to document time on a fixed price just for my own purposes and to use if an issue ever comes up from client.

Just got a fixed price job but client does appear on list of Time Tracker jobs.

From this post:

"Why does the Time Tracker display fixed-price jobs?" last month, I believe I can do that.

I just had a Live Chat and Upwork agent told me there is no facility to use Time Tracker on a fixed price job.

Does anybody know which is correct and, if I can use it, how I get this new fixed price job on Time Tracker.

Thanks.

Not 100% sure, but it looks like that the original job posting was hourly but your contract is fixed price that is why it's appearing on the time tracker.

Not true. All fixed-price jobs appear in your work diary.

You can track them for your own convenience. But that's it, no Upwork guarantees apply to hours tracked on a fixed-price contract.

Edited to add: I was replying to Kamaal, not Petra.

The support agent is correct you can't track fixed price jobs.

 Really???

Since WHEN?

I have done so for literally years!

Ela and Petra,

Sorry for my ignorance regarding if it can be 'tracked' but the general concept of my reply was that it will not be billed like hourly jobs and will not be added to your number hours worked.

OBVIOUSLY not, and that was never the question in the first place, was it?

yes you can use the tracker, but it will not count towards Upwork hours or count in any way.

I frequently track for fixed price contracts!

If you only just got the contract give it a bit of time, and close the tracker completely and restart it,  do not just log out and in again.

Petra,

Thanks.  I will try again.

Very interesting, I think it's a really good idea to keep track of time on fixed price. At the very least it would motivate me to cut to the chase and not waste time, and make time estimates more accurate.

I've never used time tracker so if there is anything not intuitive one needs to know about it, I would appreciate the details.

That is exactly how I use it! It has also come in handy once when a client accidentally deleted a set of Googles Sheets with weeks of work by several people. I had the screenshots in the work diary which allowed a data entry person to recreate most of it, saving a lot of money for the client!

Petra.

You are totally correct.

My two fixed price jobs are now in both Work Diary and Time Tracker.

Thanks.

Hi Joseph,

I apologize for the confusion the agent's reply caused you. I'll follow up with their supervisor to make sure the mistake is corrected. As Petra has described and as you have already noticed yourself, fixed-price contracts appear in the Team App as well and you can track time you spend working on them. The hours you work on fixed-price contracts will not be billed to the client and will not be reflected on your profile though.

So if I used the time tracker on a fixed price job will my client be able to see the tracking results and screenshots ?

Hi Ihab,

The screenshots and the mouse and keyboard strokes will be available in your Work Diary, and the client will be able to see it, assuming he/she will check.

As Valeria has mentioned above, the hours you work on fixed-price contracts will not be billed to the client and will not be reflected on your profile.
