Is Upwork Going to Close Soon!

I am trying to get work on Upwork for 3 years and if i calculate average earning per month on upwork then it comes out $30/Month.

So Upwork seems not a freelancing site for world wide users now, because peoples here are either biased with some countries and they write or say no third world country freelancer apply to job, i want to ask such mind set peoples that is the Knowledge & Skills that a so called first world country person owns is different with a person who has learned and got education and professional work experience with a person to whom they label as third world country?

Upwork Mostly Jobs looks like Fake, i saw a Job on Upwork about 2 years ago for a very big Freelancing website and the client was asking to show fake job counting on their website.

If there are 20 Geniune Jobs Posted then it will show 2430022 etc Jobs Posted.

Upwork Limited our chance of Hire by introducing credits, if we apply to jobs in a month using all of our credits mostly did not get any response from clients either they do not hire any one just take interviews and leave the job open for months or they open another job and invite some one or again takes interviews.

When there was no Job Credits then there was some chance of getting hired because the limit of job increase after a week or if we withdraw from a job then a slot frees up to apply on a new job instead of reserving it for unresponsive client or who does not want to hire.

20% Rule of Upwork is just a bad business intention as well 10 Credits & Hide Your Earnings and Show bid rates of others too is a bad intention it is like to make Freelancers divide into two 1 is a Richy and 2nd is Lower Class, and that Richy class is hijacking the Chances of Lower Class (labled) Freelancer by showing their bids, Upwork should show all Bidders Bids like other Freelancing sites do, and if it wants to survive instead of 1-2 years more then it should take off these limits back and Bring the Old System of Odesk else Upwork start counting days to shutdown soon, then you pockets will be empty too like you did others.

May be my words seems hard or bad to someone on Upwork but its reality that is going to catch you soon if you do not correct your ways.

An Advice to Freelancers do not drop your Rate to get hired and give Quality Work for a very low cheap and degraded value of your self, your efforts, your time, your skills, your experience, your country, due to a bad business habbit of indian freelancers introduced on mostly freelancers sites.

Sorry for any bad wordings.

I cannot agree with you. I am from Bangladesh and I earn more than an average government employee from my country.

If you are earning $30/year then definitely you should join some classe/training/courses available around you to develop your skills.

I have worked with a US Portland E Markeeting and Web Design Development Agency for a Full Time Job as a Senior Web Developer for about 3.5 Years.

At that time i was doing Bachelors of Science and Computer Science Degree (BSCS 4 Years Equivalent to MCS, Master of Computer Science)

I have worked with Good Clients too in 2010-2013 on Odesk in the category of work i offer.

I am getting Clients on Other Freelancing sites but saddly Upwork Clients does not like me then.

Hi Kamran, thank you for bringing this to our attention. Upwork does not allow discrimination against color, race or national origin. If a client expresses a preference in a job post that is discriminatory, they are in violation of our Terms of Service. Please flag this job posting as inappropriate. This allows our Marketplace Quality Team review and take action.

You can learn more about Connects on this link. If the client initiates contact by inviting you to bid or sending you an offer, you won't need to use any Connects.

Freelancers are charged a sliding fee based on your lifetime billings with each client. Service fees are the same whether the contracts are hourly or fixed-price.

20% for the first $500 you bill a client across all contracts with them
10% for total billings with a client between $500.01 and $10,000
5% for total billings with a client that exceed $10,000

Learn more about the fees here. Please also check this very helpful article on some tips about questionable jobs.

Hi Jo-An B,

Thanks for responsing to this topic as a Moderator from Upwork side so we can be discussing with some one responsible too.

I have understanding of 20% rule for different long term clients, but we know there are how much long term clients available for everyone.

I knew that if a Client Invites a Freelancer then it does not cost a Connect, but what i was pointing to is

If a Freelancer has 62 Connects for a Month, and he Applied using all connects and did not get response from client then what he has in hand Nothing.

He has lost wasted his entire Month is waiting for Clients to Response at least take interview, reject or close the job but they did not do anything and we have to sit and wait to see the month ending to again start applying to jobs with same results 99%

So this is a very very bad system Upwork has Introduced, Odesk System was very good until everyone seems happy with Odesk but Upwork there are many things happening outside about Upwork on Social Media and mostly Peoples are saying a Good Bye to Upwork due to the fact that there is no work for everyone.

At Least Upwork can not do any thing good now for Freelancer of all categories then remove that Credits Limits or make it a Weekly Limit, and Bound the Job to 20 Proposals, if a Job reaches 20 proposals then freez it for accepting new ones.

And Bound the Job Poster too in some rules before Posting a Job so we do not get our time wasted in waiting for the client to response and other issues like they delay payment for no reasons mostly this is a problem i faced with a specific country clients, they mostly delay payment for months and after they leave bad review/feedback.

Instead of making Payments Private Upwork will make Comments Private for these kinds of clients who just want to leave bad feedback for Freelancers.

There are many things i can list that Upwork needs to change but i knew i am not the CEO or someone to inforce my thoughts.

Sorry for anything i said bad or wrong, i am looking for work on Upwork but clients behave like we are asking for Charity.

There is plenty of work. There a lots of great clients and many people have all the work they can handle and more. There are simply too many freelancers, so unsuccessful ones "saying Good Bye" is a positive thing. Upwork is not a "Everyone gets rich quick" scheme, as many people seem to assume.

Obviously increasing connects would be a bad thing (more freelancers bidding on jobs, clients getting bombarded) which would lead to you getting hired (even) less.

The most ridiculous idea is this one: "If a Job reaches 20 proposals then freez it for accepting new ones."

That means the robo-bidders with the ill thought out copy-paste generic proposals would have better chances than the ones who apply carefully and properly and target their proposals to the specific jobs.

If you find more success on other platforms concentrate your efforts there.

As far as "Is Upwork Going to Close Soon?" is concerned, that's funny.

The answer, as far as I can see, is "No." - not any time soon...

Your lack of success does not point towards the platform failing, it points towards your profile not attracting (enough) business.

Hi Petra R,

Thanks for contributing here.

If Upwork sets 20 Proposals limit to a Job and 62 Credits is available for a Freelancer to use and the Robotic Copy Pasters will apply quickly and utilize all their credits more quicker so it is a good thing to make these Copy Pasters to get busy in a Job they applied in a Hurry and does not knew what they need to do to complete the job and client can terminate their contract and hire someone else.

I have many suggestions but i will not disclose them all in once i want to see what peoples have in their minds here.

Do you knew some Freelancing websites earn twice from Freelancers, One by Getting Commission from them, and 2nd by Holding the Earnings on the name of Security Period, Review Periode etc and by doing this they hold the earnings of Thousands of Peoples which is in Thousand or Millions in total and receiving Interest % from Banks i can not say what Upwork Policy is in this even this kind of thing is done in Offices, and with Government Employees too and mostly peoples are unaware of this that what is happening with them and with their money.

Do you knew this or heared about this thing ever?

Yes, that fake "fact" keeps being mentioned and bleated about. It is not true and even it was, So What?

What utter nonsense. It would lead to poor client experiences as they'd get 20 poor proposals from 20 poor freelancers and either not hire at all, or hire a poor candidate. This is one of the most ludicrously bad ideas I've seen in years.

The Connects system is not in place to help freelancers. freelancers are a dime a dozen

Tge Connects system is in place to help clients. Clients bring / pay the money that keeps the whole thing rolling.

Hi Petra

If you think this is a Fake Fact then you are living in another world of dreams sorry to say, you are far away from facts or from unaware about these happenings.

By the way thats not our propblem right now.

If a Job Poster does not want or has ability to hire a good person from 20 or 50 Proposals then it is simple that the Job is Fake or Freelancers mostly do not apply to Jobs with More then 20 Proposals i think this is a thing you knew and not a fake fact.

So if a Job is freezed to receive more proposals after reaching a limit then this is also a Bad Thing to Limit Freelancers to Apply to More Jobs they may get hired by giving them a Connects Limit for a Month and asking for More Money to Get 10 Connects means to Apply on 5 Jobs What a Good System this is.

A very good system is to filter Freelancers on Upwork is by Skills Tests passed. Which Mostly Freelancers are passing by answering the Upwork Test Quizes by Googling and Answered Upwork Tests available on web.

I have to leave will continue later.

Kamran, why are you wasting your time on a platform that obviously doesn't work for you?

Bud, nobody would have to tell me. The day Upwork doesn't work for me anymore will be my last day on Upwork. I still can't understand what you are doing here if you're not earning.

Have better results on other platforms? That's great. Focus on these platforms and stop wasting your time here.

Then why are you saying me to leave a Platform? if you do not like some one to say you leave a platform!.

And where i said that some one leave the platform, i am saying that there is a problem in the platform which is not allowing equal opportunities to peoples.

That was a simple point in my Topic but Community Leaders and Gurus have dragged it to some where else, nice job.

If you get more work and earn  more money on other platforms, why would you stay?  You are essentially running a business and you need to make decisions about what works best for your business.  I only get about 20% of my jobs through Upwork but it works beautifully for me.  If it didn't, I would leave and concentrate marketing efforts elsewhere.

very good customer support well done Leaders and Guruz team, when the guruz and leaders have such a mind set then nothing to expect.

“Leader” and “guru” are silly titles Upwork slaps on our profiles based on post count. Upwork employees are identified by a badge.

We are sharing our experience with a program that works well for us. It’s fine to raise your expectations for your own income here. It’s futile to expect Upwork to change procedures that work well for so many because you see them—contrary to our experience and to our knowledge of the freelance market—as working against you.

@Kamran K wrote:

Nah, it's Ok, stay on the platform. After all, you're earning a whopping amount of thirty bucks a year. Who would leave a place where you can earn so much money?

And yeah, it's true. Upwork is so discriminatory. I mean c'mon, how comes some earn up to fifty grands a year and others so little? Isn't this a discrimination?

Marx-up people. Like unite and stuff.

I'm not the one failing here, am I? So even if I was living in a world of dreams (which I am not, as far as Upwork is concerned) - it seems to working just fine for me.

As I said earlier, no, Upwork does not appear to be planning to close soon and if you do better on other plaforms the best solution for you is to go work there, no?

As you said : The Connects system is in place to help clients. Clients bring / pay the money that keeps the whole thing rolling.

Think on this sentance 100 times at least and a Freelancer can understand what you have explained or told the world about this Bad System for Freelancers not for managers or business owners, I am talking about Freelancers who are Individual Freelancers not connected with agency or companies because those thinks everyone Poor or Untalented.

You said earlier that Bad Freelancers or Untalented Freelancers leaving Upwork is good thing but you did not carefuly read what i said

I said: Freelancers getting success on other Platforms leaving Upwork.

This means they have got talent, skills, experience thats why they are getting success, clients, jobs, their and nothing here.

"Upwork does not allow discrimination against color, race or national origin. "

Not strictly true, is it?

No, it's not, but then again, Upwork does not need discrimination on any grounds. Its own version of natual selection does an excellent job of weeding out the unfit and unworthy.

Nope. Escrow does not work like that. It is tightly regulated. Funds in escrow are not an asset to Upwork, they are a liability: money they are responsible for, that they cannot use, and that must be paid out on a strict schedule. I imagine they are able to recover their costs. Once the funds are released from escrow, Upwork has discretion to stop its losses via its security period. None of this adds up to profit or exploitation on Upwork’s part.

Success on Upwork requires the following:

(1) A solid skill set that clients are willing to pay for, at a rate that is worth your time

(2) A workable business model for yourself, and the skills/experience to operate a small business

(3) The ability to figure out how to use the platform as it is (not as you think it should be designed), within your own business model

(4) Solid skills in communication, project management, and client management, including the ability to screen and vet clients to avoid getting entangled with those you can't please no matter what you do

(5) A mature, professional demeanor at all times (including when you think a client's negative feedback is unwarranted -- there is no upside to responding the way you did on one job)

These are non-negotiable. If you don't have and are not interested in developing every one of these items, then Upwork is not for you. (And I would argue that freelancing in general is not for you.)

You can get tons of advice and support in these forums if you approach discussions in a mature, professional manner and genuinely want to learn to use the platform as it is. Every single person here began with a limited monthly allotment of connects, no JSS, no documented UW hours--just our profiles, portfolios, and a willingness to work hard and learn how to thrive here.
