**Update: This thread has been closed for new replies**
I would like to understand why Upwork don't look at clients who don't leave feedback. Some clients are one-off users, others are too busy to leave feedback and some just don't understand how to do it. I have long-standing contracts that never received feedback, yet the messages show how happy the client was. I have other clients who were first time users and had work complete - were happy (again, said so) but didn't leave feedback. Then there are the users who just never leave feedback - for anyone! I have flagged and flagged this but the help team just keep repeating the same thread (obviously a template). I think that clients notorious for not leaving feedback should be taken into account and if a freelancer requests feedback - they should not be penalised for no feedback left. I also think Upwork should look at those contracts and make their own decisions. Am so fed up with this system that I've shifted some stuff over to another website, some clients are now private and I'm trying my best to move a load of other clients.
Solved! Go to Solution.

Hi All,
We are closing this thread from new replies because it has grown too large and with recent changes some information here is now outdated.
Here are the links to most recent changes in how JSS is calculated:
No feedback contracts no longer impacting JSS
Job size being factored into JSS
For general information about how Job Success Score is calculated, please see this help article.

The rating criteria is sorted by:
-Public Score (stars ranked)
-Private Score (0-10 ranked)
Public score is the 5 stars shown on your profile, while the private score is, precisely, the score that both the freelancer and the contractor leave when the contract terminates.
Now, if a contractor leaves a 5 stars public feedback and a low private score, this might affect your JSS because Upwork counts both rating criterias for the final score.
I suggest you to focus hard on both maintaining a good relationship and delivering great quality results.
I wish you a great luck.

Thank you!
I know this information. But please check my reviews of clients and still they are getting more work for me. Happy with it. I don't think so, with their incredible public review, there will be bad private review.

If you feel you need to give advice, which is generous of you, it better be correct, which yours isn't.

Dear Upwork, what's happening with my JSS? Why it's decreasing when I have the contracts with 5 stars?

Tetiana K wrote:Dear Upwork, what's happening with my JSS? Why it's decreasing when I have the contracts with 5 stars?
Because stars are pretty meaningless, what counts is the private feedback, and you don't have only 5 star feedback anyway.
Nov 8, 2020 12:09:26 PM by Tetiana K
I don't have all 5 star reviews, out of 12 only two, but what's the difference if it was before and my rating was 100% even with 4.6 reviews?
Nov 8, 2020 11:50:34 AM by Dor Giovanni D
Both public and private scores affect to your JSS.
Come clients might have left a 5 stars public feedback but a lower private feedback.
Try to maintain a good relationship with your clients and the results will be better 🙂

Also remember that inactive contracts might affect your JSS aswell.

My JSS was 73% before this contract. But I got 63% after this contract.
I completed this contract perfectly, and the client was extremely satisfied so added me $360 bonus.
She left me 5 star public feedback.
And there is no reason that she left bad private feedback.
I asked her about this and she told me that filled out the most positive rating.
Can you please look into this?

The new JSS system does not make any sense to me, I have a JSS of 75% and I have not had a dissatidfied client yet. I have had some that did not leave feedback and those are no longer supposed to affect the score... What is going on with this?
Nov 8, 2020 05:26:35 PM by Luiggi R
Hi William,
I'm sorry to hear you feel this way. Unfortunately, we won't be able to comment on an individual score or how specific contracts affect it. There are many factors that are taken into consideration in the JSS calculation, such as the overall number of jobs completed, both private and public feedback, as well as the dollar-weight of the jobs you've done. I suggest that you check this help article for more info.
Thank you.

Hi Julius,
It could take some time for both the My Stats page and your Profile page to be in sync. The one showing on your profile should be the correct one.
As far as the score is concerned, after looking at your recent history, all of your 2018 contracts have fallen out the calculation window and only your more recent 2020 contracts are counted. It's also worth noting that the dollar-weight of your jobs can have an impact on the overall score (considering both private and public feedback) and while your more recent contracts don't have the same level of earnings as your past ones from 2018, you can still get a good JSS, provided you keep on closing contracts with good outcomes. Feel free to check this help article for more info.
Thank you.

Thank you Upwork team for listning to us as freelancers, counting "no feedback contracts" on my JSS was really unfair as you can see in screenshots below, my JSS jumped from 76% to 92%, and my agency JSS jumped from 88% to 100%, i suffred fron this for over 1 year and i was dropped from Top Rated system with the unfair previous JSS policy. It was really a bad year for me on Upwork due to counting "no feedback contracts" on my JSS and finally this "bug" and unfair policy was removed.
I hope Upwork will improve more in future.

Hello!!
All my clients have left me a feed back of 5/ 5 stars and instead my job score is only 73% why? thanks in advance for the reply
Nov 9, 2020 09:12:23 AM by Richard R
JSS is based on mostly private feedback. My guess is the last contract completed, the one that left no public feedback, has left negative private feedback.
Technically someone with good public feedback can give negative private feedback, but I think its unlikely in your case as the feedback from those left very good comments.

Probably low private feedback on one of them
Also, this new JSS change is fun. Mine got bumped up and I suddenly started getting replies from clients after several weeks 😛

Hi dear, please why is my job success always going down despite the success of the jobs I have done for many years in this platform. My job success keeps going down and down why?
And I again, I would like to join an Agency. Can you please connect me with an Agency?
Sep 13, 2020 02:44:19 PM by Luiggi R
Hi Susan,
There are many factors that are taken into consideration in the JSS calculation, such as the overall number of jobs completed, both private and public feedback, as well as jobs without any feedback whatsoever. I suggest that you check this help article that better explains how the JSS is calculated and how all the factors mentioned above affect it. As far as joining an agency is concerned, the only way to do this is to be invited by an Agency administrator. Check out this other article for more information.
Thank you.

Hi,
I am wondering why my JSS did not change although I had 4 jobs and all of them are closed. JSS was shown when two of jobs were closed with the 5 and 3.4 as rate. Last week another 2 contracts got closed with 5 stars each. I suppose my JSS should be updated especially that it is being updated every 14 days and today was the 14th day.

Can someone explain to me this phenomenon?
JSS last 14 weeks was > 94 - 94 - 94 - 97 - 100 - 100 - 100

Contracts closed with payment, but no feedback, do not affect the JSS. They mostly didn't previously, and now they no longer do at all.
If you have old inactive contracts, just close them.

It’s really disturbing and I wonder how you calculate JSS? In the last few months, I have had 100% jss, and in the meantime, all contracts have been successfully concluded with the most feedback. It's 96% now ... I'm really confused.
Please don't forward me to the link where JSS is explained...

So my first JSS appeared on my profile, it is 71%, whereas I have completed 4 jobs by now with 5 star review from client, apart from these 4 jobs, 1 job was to find meme's from google, I provided 200 plus meme's instead of 150 as required by client, but client was not happy with the quality of images. So I gave him the meme's and even returned the bid amount, even though it was not my fault. Client told me he would give me a positive review. Another job was to manage instagram page by just posting posts through later app, I accepted the contract, after that client asked me to manage shopify as well, and search for content as well which was not in the plan. So I asked him politely that it would take much more time than mentioned in job description and I am not available, so also said no worries I have other applicants available. I will not force you to work and the contract ended.
So this is by far the story of all my projects, now I need to know why my JSS is 71%

No money paid contracts have a major negative impact, as well as private feedback. The public stars are not impacting the calculation a lot, if at all.

Hi,
I have successfully completed 4 jobs and earned $900+ but still I cant see my job success rate. Can anybody tell why?

Aisha S wrote:. Can anybody tell why?
Yes- Because it last updated on the 8th of November, and you only had 3 completed contracts at that point.
You'll get it next time it updates (every 14 days, on Sunday evening UTC)
