Job Posting says 0 invites but it is not true

Hi everyone! So this just happened, I sent a proposal for a job that had 0 invites, this is something I make a point to see before I apply to any job. If a client sent out a bunch of invites I know that hurts my chances and I may not want to spend connects on it. So I go to the job posting from my proposals to check on it and it turns out the client invited 15 people and is interviewing 9! There go my connects!

I tried to find some information here and I guess it could be that he invited people after posting the job? I don't know that doesn't seem very fair. If they plan on inviting freelancers can't that take place before the job is posted? I know they may need to add a couple later or something but 15! It just doesn't seem very efficient.

Hi Andrea,

Do you still see a different number of invites on the job posting and when you view your proposal? There may be a few minutes delay between those two pages. Additionally, the client could have invited freelancers while or shortly after you sent your proposal in and a lot of freelancers are quick to accept invites.

Still, all proposals are delivered to the client and they aren't sorted by time submitted by default. As long as you wrote a quality proposal and have skills and experience to complete the job, you definitely have a chance.

Hi Valeria, thanks that is what I thought. I do still see the same number of people invited and interviewing. I know I still have a chance but it is not the same chance, now the client is probably going to see the interviews first and may not even think to see all proposals, that is understandable on their end, but every connect is important to me and I'd like to make an informed decision about where I spend them. I just thought it would be a good idea for the clients to be able to make initial invitations if they are gonna be so many before the job is posted so publicly. Thanks.

Hello Andrea,

Upwork has Talent Specialists that help clients in getting freelancers to respond to their job post. Especially if the client is new. In my own opinion, I think this is what happened. A talent scout may have sent invitations to few freelancers. This is to aid clients hire a freelancer right away.

As for connects, there are job posts where you can get refunded for your connects especially if the client does not hire you. So keep an eye on that one.

Don't worry about chances. When one door closes, two doors will open for you. Stay positive!

Hi Jomarie! The client is not new, he has 70 hires. I hope is not the work of a Talent Specialist that would be worst LOL. Let's just say they don't have the best reputation when it comes to their abilities to select candidates. I guess I am just frustrated because I spent too many connects last month but yeah just have to keep going I guess!

I don't remember if this was one where I would get my connects back, it would be nice to be able to see that afterward so I know to withdraw my application after some time if that is not the case, I don't like to have a lot of idle proposals there collecting dust.
