Job Posts with no hires

Hello,

I am new to Upwork. So far, I have sent a total of 17 proposals. I got hired after sending my fourth proposal, which made me very happy, but since then, nothing. So I decided to go through all the job posts I have applied for to find out that only one of them shows in the section "Activity on this job" that has hired a freelancer. I looked at the Hire Rate of each one of them and many have a Hire Rate of 0%. Could it be that a client hires someone but that does not show on the "Activity of this job" section?  

I hope I have made myself clear.

If you want to be frugal with your connects, stay away from clients who have posted many jobs and have a hire-rate of 0, as those are statistically least likely to hire anyone.

Yes, it s possible, when the client hires their favourite freelancer directly, for example, rather than via the actual proposal, or rehires a previous freelancer who didn't apply.
