Jobs never awarded

I am quite tired to see jobs I am bidding on never being awarded to anyone.

I wonder how many % of the jobs that that remain unawarded.

 

Connects flies away so quick..sort of paying for bidding on projects that never would be awarded..

 

Its frustrating. And I dont know how Upwork could could make it different. 

 

I guess have to even more think twice on the projects we bid for..

It happens all the time, jobs not being awarded to anyone could have multiple reasons (they're scamming, they've found someone else for the job, they don't need the assignment to be completed anymore, etc.), it's part of the Upwork game.

 

All you can do as a freelancer is do a bit of research upfront. How big of a % of the Client's previous jobs have actually been awarded to freelancers? If it's ridiculously low I simply don't bid. ๐Ÿ™‚ I once saw a Client who had over 100 jobs posted with 0% being awarded. That's an instant report to Upwork.

 

Do what I do. Check out a job post, do the necessary research, apply (if you're interested) and then don't look back. Maybe it gets awarded to someone else, maybe it doesn't. In any case, if there is anything in it for me, I'll surely be contacted by the Client him/herself. If not, there's nothing I can do about it.

I think there's also a problem with clients being notified that someone has applied to their job. I think Jean brought it up in another post - clients will often post a job on several platforms then wait for the email notifications to come in letting them know people have applied. Upwork stopped sending emails to clients when they had proposals and clients would hire on other platforms, thinking they had no applications here. I don't know if that is still part of the problem, or if even makes up a large percentage of the 'no-hire' jobs, but it would be nice if it was fixed (if it hasn't been already.)

It could be one reason perhaps.

But I am trying to apply only to jobs I can see clients has verified account, have a high % of awarded projects..etc.

But, still it is a problem. And there are too many jobs there not awarded..which I find frustrating even if I have to deal with it..

They have. Upwork will not bug them by sending an email for every proposal, but they are informed when first ones arrive.

I have over 40 pages of invitations that were never filled.

 

If they don't reply in 24 to 48 hours (less, depending on my mood) to my application OR response to an invite, I withdraw my application (unresponsive customer).

 

My time is no less important than that of a client.

 

Remember, that "job" a customer spent 2 minutes posting, could generate 30, 40, + responses.

 

Some applicants will send a copy and paste; others a thoughtful reply. In the meantime, that "2 minute" post by the customer burned through ... what? ... 10, 20 man-hours of "applicant" time? Time that could have been spent "producing".

 

Nah ... If I can get excited about a customer's posting but thay can't "get excited" about my proposal, forget it.

 

The serious customers (do often) come around and contact me even if I withdraw ... at which point you (might) assume they are serious.

What is the use of withdrawing the application? You just robbed yourself of 2 connects and a possible assignment. I have had clients who didn't respond within 48 hours, but that didn't mean they weren't legit paying clients who required my help.

Every now and then I have clients coming back months after my proposal. Sometimes because their project was delayed, sometimes because they were the other translator they chose screwed the job. Or because they have other needs.

 

Additionally, if you withdraw your proposal, you won't get your connects back, thus I don't see the need for this.

Connects are cheap if not free depending on your plan. Any other form of 'advertising' would cost you considerablely more .

 

Look at it like this ....

Do you make a purchase every single time you walk into a store?  Do you 'shop around' when comparing quality and price? 

 

It isn't often that you find the Perfect Something you Must Have right this minute. 

 

Why should potential clients be any different?

I agree with you Karin. I think that if we bid in a project that later is cancelled or is not awarded to anyone, our Connects should be returned. We should request UPWORK to do something about it. We should be working instead of taking time doing research in every client. I agree with you, it is a problem and Upwork should do something about it. Also, I feel that if all freelancers would request solutions to this problem, Upwork would do something about it because I always find Freelancers giving nice advice, which is great, but we need real solutions.

What did you do in a Brick and Mortar situation? What happened when they didn't hire you?  Did you tell them you want your gas money or bus money refunded to you because they wasted your time?

 

If you're not throwing around your connects wildly you won't have to worry about getting them back because you'll still have some left before the new month renewal.

 

These days, people invite me to their jobs. Sure, we're not always a good fit, but sometimes we are, and I don't use connects in this situation. Last month I had 40 connects left.  

 

I'm not the busiest freelancer here and I haven't brought in tons of cash, but I use my connects wisely and don't apply to jobs out of my skills and interest range. 

 

While you're waiting for Upwork to 'do something' about this horrifyingly unjust situation ๐Ÿ˜‰ , just apply to jobs where you think you'll have a good chance to score. If you don't get the job, it's just the way things go sometimes. ๐Ÿ˜‰

To clarify, if a job is cancelled without hiring the Connects are returned to freelancers who applied.

I think Wendy was simply clarifying Upwork's position on connects. They only get returned if the client cancels the job offer or if Upwork delists the job. This is not likely to change. The answer is to use your connects sparingly. You should bid, not only on the jobs you know you can do, but on the jobs you want to do.

What if there is more than one such jobs in a day, through whole month? I should bite my nails watching opportunity goes away, while I applied to exactly those jobs that will never get awarded to anyone?

I agree with you.  However, in order to prevent wasting of connects on SPAM postings, such as other freelancers trying to get bid samples, people simply price shopping or people not serious about their jobs, Upwork should consider clients award rate even if the case is "Unawarded"

Especially, if the client has just signed up and does not have a verified payment method.

Does this mean the client hired outside of Upwork?  Otherwise, it would seem that the message would ne "Hired another freelancer".

 

If so, is that not the same as a Cancelled Job?

Connects are not returned if the client declines the proposal for any reason.

The thing is you can never be sure which one will bring a hire.

There were few times I was totally suspicious (before connects) and I would apply with just one sentence because I didn' t see the point in losing time on longer letter. But client responded, on my surprise, and I got the job.

Hello Upwork Community. The subject may not be too explicit so I'll give more details. Do you often come across jobs which are opened for months but it seems that client can't decide whom to choose?  Some clients do tend to have a look at what they've posted though (via the "Last Viewed" )....

Could Upwork just let the clients leave a "message" on jobs, that are delayed/filled/etc.? 
A simple drop-down list would do. Now, this is about shadow boxing, as far as it gets.

Hello. Im fairly new to upwork and I think I have just about got my head around the site but when it comes to job proposals things seem to be a bit of a mess. Probably about 20% of the jobs I apply for I get or they hire someone else and the job is closed. Fair play. The 80% of the jobs I apply for sit in a giant list of jobs that are in limbo. Most of them seemed to have hired another freelancer but the job isnt taken off my record. I just have a huge list that I constantly have to keep withdrawing my proposal from to get off my home screen. Why does this happen? What happens with those jobs? There should be a way to group manage these proposals or have a time limit for clients that removes the listing if it is more than a month old. Its just annoying and makes the application process look very sloppy. Just my 2 cents.

A lot of clients don't know that they can close a job post if they want to after a successful hire. I am pretty sure the client interface isn't intuitive enogh for a new client to use.

 

I had made a similar post a few weeks backs, asked UW to make closing a job post more intuitive. I had raised the point in this post:

You can also archive your proposals, in case you don't want to withdraw them. This stops them from appearing on your main screen, but you can still view them on the archive tab.

 

I usually archive them after about a week. If the client does happen to come back to it after that, your proposal is still there.
