Mobile app red number

I assume the increasing red number at the coner of the app icon is meant to tell you about new messages or alerts, but for the life of me I can't get the number to go down even if I visit every possible page on the app. Anybody know how to acknowledge that everything has been read so that the number goes away? On Android.

I've been having this problem on my windows PC but not my Android phone for some reason. Very annoying bug.
