Hi Andrea Ivanna,

Welcome to Upwork.

The best way to learn more about how to freelance is to go through the Upwork's Learning Paths. There are dozens of resources there and in other places to assist you on your journey.

An important part of your freelancing journey on Upwork is getting your profile 100% complete with the information potential clients want to see. Here are some suggestions for your profile:

Title: Make your title specific to a skill area or occupation. For example: Customer Service Representative.

Overview/Summary: Your summary needs to speak like you are a freelancer (business) providing services to other businesses (clients). Right now, your summary sounds like you are an employee looking for an employer, and clients will be confused by this. Instead of saying you are looking for a position (you should not be) tell clients about the services you can provide and how you can help them. For example:

"I am an attentive Customer Service Representative with experience providing host and sales reprentative customer service support to my clients. I can interact with your customers to provide and process information in response to orders, purchases, inquiries, and concerns and requests about products and services. My goal is to improve your customer service experience and help make your businesses successful."

Portfolio: Add a portfolio to show samples of your work. The portfolio is a chance to make a positive first impression on potential clients. If you don’t have relevant examples to add to your portfolio, you can create customer service or sales representative items that demonstrate your skills.

Hello everyone, I need suggestions regarding niche changes in my profile. I recently changed my profession from a graphic designer to a more niched area i.e. label and packaging design. I just want to know if it's okay or if am I going for the more competitive niche. I changed it because I never got any invitations and my niche was graphic design because of high competition. Did I do the right thing? Any suggestions would be really appreciated and helpful.

Thank you

Hello Community,

I have entered all the details in their respective field to complete my profile; however, I'm stuck on the "Employment" part.
I need your guidance and need to know what should be filled in the "Employment" field as I never had any job.
I'm into business and have started my professional career in business only.

Also, It would be a great help if someone experienced here can have a look at my profile and help me with suggestions to make my profile noticeable.

Thanks 🙂

Hi Manjit,

On Upwork, your profile is a critical tool to your success. It is a great way to demonstrate your skills and experience. Leveraging it to its full potential may help you differentiate yourself from other freelancers and improve the likelihood of getting hired. Here are some of the items successful freelancers incorporate into their profiles below:

  • Build your profile: This is your chance to showcase your skills and experience to potential clients. Complete your profile, including your work history, education, and a description of your services.
  • Build a strong portfolio: Your portfolio may help impress potential clients with real-life examples of your skills and expertise. Add any projects you’ve completed in the past to help you showcase your skills.
  • Network with clients: Establish good relationships by delivering quality work on time and communicating effectively. This can help you secure repeat business and new opportunities in the future.
  • Bid on projects: When you find a project you're interested in, submit a proposal outlining why you're the best candidate for the job. Make sure to tailor your proposal to the specific project and client.
Still need to figure out where to begin on Upwork? These resources can point you in the right direction:

With these steps, you'll be on your way to success.

Good luck!

Hello Manish,

I think your profile is fine, but I would make the start of your overview/summary more client-focused. For example, I would remove the greeting and your name, and tell clients what you can do to help them:

I'm a highly skilled professional copywriter with 7+ years of experience in leading ad agencies and well-known start-ups. I can help businesses stand out by creating compelling copy and content across diverse domains including presentations, product descriptions, short stories, articles, and social media content.

I think the other areas of your profile look good.

Hi Saif,

I think you are wasting space in the first sentence of your overview/summary. This part: "Greetings, Welcome and Thank you for Checking out My Profile!" provides no value to clients and can be removed. Why? Because the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. You have limited space to grab their attention, so you want clients to see important information--not a greeting.

The rest of your summary is really long and most clients will never read it. I think the list of Courses / Certification: is unnecessary, and you certications have their own section in your profile. The list of services areas is long and you can probably combine similar or redundant content to reduce its size.

The other areas of your profile look good.

Hello Esther,

Right now, your profile has multiple problems; the most of important being, it is not complete.

The first thing you should do is change your profile photo. The picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

Make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. The best way to get your profile setup is to go through the following Academy Courses and Learning Paths:

Hello Mudassir,

I think your profile looks good. Your summary does a good job of telling clients what you can do and how you can help them.

You might to change your profile photo. Your photo is not bad, but the picture in your photo should be a close-up image of your head and shoulders that clearly shows your face. Read through Upwork's best practices for How to Choose A Good Profile Picture.

The other areas of your profile look good. I do not see any problems or issues that would prevent a client from hiring you.

Hello Anastasiia,

I like your profile; I think you have a great approach to providing graphic design services. My only suggestion is to avoid talking about being a "beginner." Most clients do not care if you are a beginner. Clients care about getting results and if you have the skills to get results, they will hire you.

With that, I suggest changing the first sentence in your overview/summary to: "Creative and Passionate Artist Offering 2D Illustrations and Graphic Design!" Then, change the first sentence in the first paragraph to: "Are you in search of an enthusiastic and talented artist and graphic designer who can bring your ideas to life through captivating 2D illustrations?"

If your client asks about your experience and qualifications, you can tell them that your experience is less than 2 years, but I would avoid the word "beginner."

Next, update your skills list with more skill categories, but only if those categories are related to your graphic design work. We are allowed up to 15 skills. It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

Also, your Graphic Assistant job at Mindy Teams is listed twice in your employment history and should be listed only once, if it is the same job.

Everything else in your profile looks great.

Hey Emilia,

Your profile is incomplete and I suggest not applying to job until it is 100% complete. Here are some tips:

1) Rewrite your title to be specific to a skill area, job or occupation. For example: Customer Service Representative, Sales & Marketing Specialist, Sales Representative, etc.

2) Remove your name from your overview/summary. Then, make sure your summary builds upon your title. Speaking in first-person point of view (i.e., "I", "my", etc.) and do no refer to yourself in the third-person. Tell clients which services you provide and how you can help meet their needs.

3) Since you are new to Upwork, make sure your profile is 100% complete before applying to jobs. The best way to get your profile setup is to go through the following Academy Courses and Learning Paths:

Hi Satnam,

I looked through your profile and overall, I think it is good. I have a few suggestions for small changes that might help improve it.

Title: I suggest using the word "Front-End" (with a dash or space) instead of "Frontend," which appears to be one word. I know "frontend" can be found everywhere, but the real term is "front-end", which is how Upwork defines it for its searches and skill categories.

Overview/Summary: I highly suggest removing the first two sentences (see screenshot below).

celgins_1-1689439736652.png

Why? Because the first two sentences of your summary are shown to clients when they search for freelancers. You have a very small window of opportunity to grab their attention. Clients care about results, so you need to tell them--within those first two sentences--what you can do for them. You do not want to waste the first two lines with a greeting and unnecessary text.

Skills: Add one of your most important skill categories to your list: Front-End Development. These skill categories act as keywords. It is important to keep your skills list updated with relevant skills categories so that Upwork can match you with relevant jobs, and so your profile will appear when clients search for your skills.

Employment History: Add short job descriptions for each job in your employment history. This also helps your profile appear in client searches for relevant skills and freelancers.

Everything else in your profile looks good.

Hello Youssef,

My first suggestion is to sell yourself the way you would offline. Do not worry about being new to Upwork; this site is simply a platform for you to reach prospective clients, market to them, and provide them services.

I looked through your profile and most of it looks good. When looking at your overview/summary, I noticed that most of it tells a great story including your background, career, and journey. This sounds great, but unfortunately, most clients do not care. Clients care about getting results and they come to Upwork to find front-end developers who can help them get those results.

The overview/summary is one of the most important parts of your profile--especially the first two sentences. The first two sentences of your summary are the first thing the client sees when they seach, so you want to say something interesting that grabs their attention. Personal information and speaking about your journey can be inspiring, but it rarely motivates clients to click to read more.

My suggestion is to use the first paragraph of your summary to tell prospective clients exactly who you are and what you can do for them. For example:

"I'm a highly skilled Full-Stack Developer specializing in building scalable and robust user-focused applications using React, MongoDB, Node, Express, Next.js, JavaScript, and others such as Shell, C, Docker, PHP, and Vue. I can create dashboards, authentication interfaces, e-commerce stores, inventory/ordering systems, and other tools to help improve your business processes."

I know this sounds simple, but this is really all clients expect. In fact, many clients will not read much more than a few paragraphs, so you want to tell them--early in your summary and without any extraneous words--what you can do and why they should hire you based on the results you can get for them.

The other areas of your profile look good. With a shorter, more client-focused summary, I think you can keep more clients engaged in your profile and hopefully, win more jobs.

Hi upwork community! Please check my profile and help me to make it better if there's any fault. I want to be a successfull freelancer so, please guide me how to get first client.

celgins

Hi Zaina,

There are not many good guides on how to get your first client. Most of us had to send several proposals and wait weeks or even months before winning our first job. The most important thing is to make sure you have the skills and qualifications required for each job you apply.

I looked through your profile and I have a few suggestions for improving it:

Title: There is a chance some clients will be confused about the services you provide. Your title uses skills that are not necessarily related (i.e., translation and article writing). Since tranlation stands on its own, I suggest creating a Specialized Profile that focuses specifically on translation services. You can mention translation, but it might be less confusing to clients if your title is: Content Writer and Proofreader | Articles, Blogs, Documents.

Overview/Summary: There are a few grammatical errors in your first few sentences that should be corrected. I recommend removing the entire second sentence: "A little bit about me,I'm a professional that is eager to learn more and gain more experience in the fields of translation and content creation" because clients are not looking for freelancers who need to learn or gain more experience. Clients are looking for freelancers who have the skills to help them get results.

I suggest focusing on the first two sentences of your summary (since clients see the first two sentences when they search)

I am a skilled Content Writer and Proofreader who can emphasize your points and turn them into compelling stories. I can write articles, blogs, academic material, presentations, and develop other text for your social media needs. I can proofread completed web content and documents to find and fix language and grammar errors, and translate your web content and documentation into other languages.

(Then, talk more about the content writing services you provide and how you can meet the client's needs.)

You will do the same for your translation specialized profile. Most of your summary is about translation, so that will be an easy fix. Or you can make your main profile about Translation and make your specialized profile about Content Writing. Either way, I think it will be less confusing to clients if you keep them separated and only mention the other within your summaries.

Portfolio: Do not forget to add skill categories to each item in your portfolio.

The other areas of your profile look good.

Hello Upwork Community! I would love some feedback on my profile and I would be happy to review yours, https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/~011a01fd13e2567525

Hello Colleen,

I like your profile; I think your overview/summary starts great and gives prospective clients the information they need to understand your services and how you can help them. Your summary is a bit long and most clients will not read it all, but I think the information you provide is really good.

I think you could use one or two more items in your portfolio. You should also add short job descriptions to each job in your employment history--especially since each job is highly relevant to the product management services you provide on Upwork.

Everything else looks great!

Hi John,

I looked through your profile and I think it's great. As a former Upwork client, I'm sure you know what you would like to see from a freelancer, and your profile appears to include all the necessities.

On the freelancer side, our profiles rely heavily on the whims and constructs of matching and search algorithms. The algorithms decide where our profiles appear in client searches and which jobs are shown to us in our My Feed and Best Matches feeds. This is done using skill categories as keywords, and the algorithm likes it when your title, summary, skills and portfolio use relevant or identical skill categories.

With that, I suggest updating your skills list to include two important skill categories: Digital Marketing and WordPress e-Commerce. Both are mentioned or relevant to your title and summary, which means you should probably add a WordPress e-commerce sample to your portfolio to ensure the link between your title, summary, and portfolio remains consistent and strong.

I'm going to assume you didn't leave the University of Arizona and jumped head-first into running your own show. 😆 If you had previous jobs--especially web development or digital marketing jobs--you should add them to your employment history, and include short job descriptions for each one.

I think that's it for now; the other items in your profile look fine.

Good luck!
