I can totally relate to your problem, I have spent over 200 connects so far, over 90% of the proposals aren't even viewed by the clients and I believe there should be a better system designed for this.

It was a great place before Covid and a good place even into 2022.
There were fewer freelancers and you didn't pay for connects. You got a fixed number every month and it was enough to get jobs.
You as a freelancer had tests to clear in your category, and clients were vetted. Payments were assured and you had fewer scams.
But Upwork never made a profit in its 15 years of existence. It finally made a profit in 2023 due to sale of connects, boosted proposals and boosted profiles.
As people without marketable skills entered in droves last year to facilitate sale of connects, most clients left.
Some are enamoured by the AI craze and have reduced hiring.
Scammers have become the norm now.
Whether good clients will come back, only time will tell.
Sadly, you guys have joined after the golden period of Upwork for freelancers.

It should be in Upwork's interest to maintain the platform as a great place further, providing a save place for the freelancers, also a decent procedure for the connects usage, along with their refund in specific cases.

The shareholders won't change track until the connects business goes down.
They have millions of freelancers trying to win the lottery of jobs, so the scenario isn't going to change in the near future.
There are still jobs to be won but they are buried deep. You need to be really, really good at what you do to stand out.

Upwork has no interest in providing anything for freelancers. There are freelancers making money, but Upwork is a side gig for most people, bringing in a few extra dollars. Not that there aren't high earners, but Upwork recently penalized high earners by increasing the fees.

That's really sad to hear... I had a totally different opinion when I've recently signed up on the platform and I still have hope it is not as bad as you've described it heh

Don't forget the "profit" from firing 15% of the Upwork staff, a significant number for any business, and representing a substantial dollar figure.

The proposals not being viewed by clients is a new problem that was not here a few months ago. The most likely explanation is that reputable clients stop reading new proposals after they've opened their first 10 garbage proposals. This info comes from clients. They get tired/pissed off and your qualitative proposal is not even viewed. This is an urgent problem that should be addressed by Upwork, since no one is interviewed and no one is hired.

Yes, Upwork can be a difficult place to find a legitimate job. However, there are people making money.
You will not find a legitimate client with your current profile. You are at high risk of being scammed, because scammers can tell you haven't read or aren't following the rules and best practices. The profile speaks volumes to the clients and scammers. The more professional the profile, you will draw more clients and fewer scammers.
Please read this post and follow all the links. Learn the Terms of Service and the Red Flags on Scams. Don't bid on a job unless you hold every qualification, and don't boost unless you know you will be one of the top two. Boosting means the client may see the top proposal first, depending on the boost, but they don't have to look at it, or do anything with it. Boosting is advertising, and like all advertising, it doesn't cover poor quality.

Unfortunately, it's the same for me. There are no more interview calls, and I'm constantly spending money on new connections, but there are no responses. It's starting to become frustrating.

I have been making basically all my earning in Upwork for the last 7 years. I have a 100% JSS and used to receive lots of invitations. I have been buying connects (which never did before) and applying during the last week and none of my proposals have been even viewed. I really cannot believe that this is happening with a platform I used to respect a lot. This "pay to win" is really dissapointing.
