Non-resident alien in the US with CPT approved

Hello,

I couldn't find any other way to reach out to customer support, so I'm writing here.

I'm an F1 student working with a company for the summer. I have gotten my CPT approved and everything. My employer has hired me through Upwork and wants to pay me through here.

However, I noticed that I cannot get paid until I fill in either W9 form or W8BEN form (tax forms).
In Upwork, it says the W9 form is for US citizens or resident aliens (F1 student after 5 years). In this case, I'm neither. I have only been in US for two years now.

Please help me with this situation. I'm in dire need of some guidance.

Hi Kritika,

Please consult a local tax professional to determine whether your freelancer earnings are taxable. U.S. persons are required to file a Form W-9.
