Not being invited to jobs?

Hi all!

I am just curious as to know why I am not being invited to jobs here on oDesk...I regularly get invited to jobs on Elance, but not here.

Just wondering if maybe I am missing something, or if there is something that I can do (outside of applying to jobs and growing my hours and reputation on oDesk, of course).

Maybe my profile is "hidden" somehow?  Or am I just impatient and paranoid? lol

Thanks in advance for any tips or advice!

There are three possible interpretations of what you are saying. It is not clear to me from your post which of the following best describes your feelings or situation:

1. "I regularly apply to appropriate jobs on oDesk, using up my job quota. But these days I never receive an invitation to interview or discuss the job further."

or

2. "on Elance I routinely am invited to jobs based purely on the fact that my profile is there. I do not proactively apply to jobs there, but I receive profitable invitations. I am wondering why oDesk doesn't yield the same relatively easy results for me."

or

3. "On oDesk I apply to jobs and I think I have a good profile. But I neither receive invitations from out of the blue from clients searching for my skill set, nor do I receive any invitations to interview for jobs, and I'm wondering why. I feel like I have had success on Elance but on oDesk I feel like I am invisible."

You're only one of the many looking for a job. There are hundreds and thousands of people applying on oDesk, and Clients must look at all of them to ensure they're making the best pick.

Take a break from putting in applications, and focus on other oDesk tasks: tests, filling out your profile, and reading through some of the topics here on this forum. Keep at it, practice some patience, and the fruits of your labor will come.

Hope this helps, Amanda.

Thank you, Josh ๐Ÿ™‚

Whether the issue involves 1) not receiving invitations from oDesk clients in response to applications submitted by the freelancer; or 2) not receiving invitations from oDesk clients resulting from client initiated searches for freelancers, in both cases "visibility" is an overriding factor.

In the case of not receiving invitations from oDesk clients in response to applications submitted, the freelancer's applications might be located below those of applicants with supposedly better qualifications or even placed in a "hidden" folder, all of which is controlled by the oDesk "mad robots" (algorithms).

In the case of not receiving invitations from oDesk clients as a result of their searches for freelancers, the freelancer's applications might be located below those of applicants with supposedly better qualifications. Again, controlled by the oDesk "mad robots" (algorithms).

There might be other things to consider as well; things outside freelancers' control. For instance, oDesk had been experimenting on the live core site by providing clients with lists of recommended (maybe "featured") freelancers for consideration. You guesed it...those "mad robots" again!

Becoming well-established on oDesk these days is a lot harder than it used to be. Staying that way is even harder.

Best of luck!

"Visibility" (or the lack thereof) is indeed an overriding factor. Read other Community posts about the oDesk "mad robots" (algorithms).

Thank you for the response!

I will just keep on keeping on ๐Ÿ˜‰

P.S. I am quite near Ocala myself...love that area!  So gorgeous with all the horse properties.

HI, I have almost 15K hours logged at Odesk and 4.64 starts. I have applied straight for 3 weeks (25 applications) and no response and no invitations when in fact I have recieved before at least. Why is this? I am also hidden? How can these be resolved. I have been here at Odesk since 2010 and it is only now that I have these problem.

Hi Lynnette May,

Sorry to hear you haven't received many invitations from clients lately. As long as you apply to jobs within your skillset your applications shouldn't be hidden. I would also recommend you revisit your oDesk profile and make some improvements such is capitalizing your name properly and expanding your profile overview. It should definitely help you attract good clients.

Best of luck!

Hi Valeria,

i am also facing the same problem as Lynnette May. I have been in Odesk since 2013 and its only now that my applications seems to be hidden.

i have confirmed from the Odesk support that my account is not under review.

My profile clearly states am an Academic/Reume writer.

I used to appear in all the list of job applications untill 2 weeks ago when it all began. i apply for jobs within my skill set by my name is still missing from the list of applicants.

Kindly offer a solution.

Regards,

Pet

Lynnette, it sounds like the math finally caught up with you and now your account is under review.

The only way to verify this is to open a ticket with customer service and ask them:
"Is my account under review? What should I do?"

Do NOT say anything else. Do not explain your situation. A short question will be more likely to yield a quick, accurate response.

Don't they notify freelancers somehow when they get under review?

Don't correct my grammar!

Vesna, there have been discussions at oDesk about beginning to notify contractors when their account is put under review, but for the most part there has never been any notice.

I believe that the current system provides no notification. This may change in the future.

Sorry I don't have better news for you about this. My preference would definitely be for contractors to always be notified.

 Hi Vesna,

I am sorry that you have been receiving less invitations from clients. However, I have checked and your account is not under review. Freelancers can be given an advance warning asking them to improve their performance and only if no improvements are made, their accounts can be put under a formal review and they will receive a notification about that action as well.

Hi Valeria,

I love following your posts because you offer practical solutions.

I have the same predicament as Lynnette and have confirmed that my account is not under review. Please what is the best thing for me to do?

I have customized my profile page and only apply to jobs within my job skill.

what are the chances of me getting any new client if my applications are hidden? or should i quit Odesk?

Please assit.

regards,

Pet

Valeria,
Thank you for your note about this and for your helpful links.

Although contractors may be dismayed to receive these warnings, the fact that they receive any warning or notification at all is actually a contractor-friendly improvement over the old way of doing things.

Also, it is good that there is a clear intention on oDesk's part to inform contractors when their account is put on review (or put "on hold", to use the term from the document that you linked to).

This is a helpful, positive change for contractors.

This is a relatively recent change in intention. It would not be surprising if there are still a few bugs to work out in the new notification algorithms nor would it be surprising if there are still contractors only now realizing that there is a problem with their account whose accounts were set to on hold/on review status before notifications began. I believe that no contractor should assume that their account is not on review or not heading toward review just because they did not receive a message.

Hi Valeria,

I am almost new to Upwork because it's only 2 months since I've joined.

But I've been working hard so far and luckily got Top rated Badge in my first working month

I was so happy and expected to get more long term jobs because Upwork certified my skills and professionality.

But unfortunately, I am not receiveing any job invitation recently and not sure what I have to do.

I tried to study Upwork policy again and polish my profile again according to your guide, but no luck.

I really appreciate if you check my profile and give me some advice to boost my career.

Thank you in advance

~ Zhong

So Ronald, are you saying that we can do nothing about the Odesk Robots?

Since my applications are either hidden or placed below others, what are the chances of me ever getting a client? should i continue or stop applying for jobs?

Kindly offer a solution.

Regards,

Pet

Thanks all for answers.

I just got home from travel and saw four emails. Hoped one of them would be a job interview or invite. No.

It was a message from oDesk:

"Congratulations! You have successfully verified your identity on oDesk."

My ID was verified two years ago, I have 74 jobs and over 1000 hours.

Live support agent said it's some oDesk bug and they are receiving ton of complaints.

To me it looks like a brutal joke.

Hi Guys,

I am facing the similar issue and really dont know what to do ?

I have 4k+ hours logged in Upwork and as per The Upwork Freelancer Success Team, I have a sound profile.

But instead of that why I am not being invited by the clients. I have applied 40+ applications from last 4 weeks plus I have bought extra connects as well. I have received a few messages from client side where it looks like that they are interested in me. But they got disappear and not remain active there after.

Can you guys please let me know, What's been going on ? Why I am not getting the invites ? Why client taking too much time in hiring process ?

From past few months I am looking for new long term contract and due to above said issues, I am not able to get one. If this remains continue then I will be forced to look for jobs outside Upwork.

Cheers

Hi Yuneek. I know what is your problem because I have exactly the same one.

Have a look at these search results for you:

https://www.upwork.com/o/profiles/browse/?q=Yuneek

See the "Any experience" dropdown - there is no results for any of options. Clients can't find you because this is a one of the main three search options and it is broken (not for all freelancers though). This option is also required for new Job post - so you are not shown in "Recommended" freelancers for any job, you are not shown for any "freelancer for job" search. This bug is known for months and they can't fix it, so you should look for another platform for now, I suppose.

Thanks Pavel!

I was not aware of this issue and believe that I suffered a great deal due to this.

I tried to escalate this issue through support team. But not sure how much time they are going to take to resolve this issue.

No, that is not his problem.

Searching for his keyword (NO client, when searching for a skill, would search with a name. If I want an ISTQB Expert I search for ISTQB,not some random name) he appears in 3rd place on the first page...

Hi Petra,

That means we need to be very sure what to put in our title. I try to change it over the time so that clients can see my listed in their search/filter result.

I really want to put few more things in it but as per "The Upwork Freelancer Success Team" title should not be too long. So I need to ask you this, how long a title should be acceptable.

I saw guys who has long title got seleced as well.

Regards

Yuneek

I think your title is fine, especially in your niche.

There does not seem to be a problem with your visibility, as I found you easily and on the first page when using relevant search terms (rather than your name which is abject nonsense, as someone who does not know you won't search for a random name)

If you are not being chosen or invited chances are the issue lies elsewhere. Maybe it is your cover letter? Are you priced in the same ball-park as others with comparable skills and comparable experience?

As an expert resource in my field, I am still not bidding that high due to sewer competition out there. I mostly quote a price according to Desired Experience Level but still, in spite of these measures I am not getting a positive response.

If you would like to view my cover letter, Please provide me your email id. Love to receive honest feedback.

Yuneek, I'd say that you should be very careful with adding more things, not because you may end with a title that's too long, but because you may end up choosing words that are totally irrelevant in the sense that they won't help you rank higher when a client is looking for the skill (ISTQB tester) that you have.

Hi Olga,

Can you please confirm if my current title looks alright to you?

"ISTQB certified Expert QA Engineer, QA Lead"

Hi Yuneek! I sent you a PM a couple of weeks ago.

Petra, my message was all about the "Experience Level" - did you read it?

Please add an "Experience level" to you search query and you'll see that Yuneek is not found by any. It means that clients do not see him as a recommended freelancer and as a freelancer feeting a job since "Experience Level" is required for a job description.
