I don’t have this option but

I have it too!!! When I was chatting to a client yesterday, I have noticed that the circle around his name in the chat box was green, and all my other ("offline") clients were colored black.

 

I am not quite sure how I would feel if the messaging system turns into real chat where clients can see if I am online at the moment, as sometimes I don’t feel like answering to questions immediately. This is not Facebook yet every day it feels as it is going in that direction!

 Indeed it does.

 

Enter sending a message instead of moving to a new line, the private feedback system effectively being a "Like/Dislike" button, and now an online status indicator.

 

It looks like Upwork have hired 25 devs and they're all desperate to justify their salary.

You can switch off the option to send a message by hitting Enter here. And you can switch the online visibility off here.

I do understand enter-to-send can be disabled, I was just illustrating the point that Upwork is becoming more like FB every day.

There are pros and cons to it. I guess as long as you play with the toggle, things should be ok and perhaps advantageous for us at times.

Well, it looks like the powers that be have combined my account with one of my clients. Oh, my password was changed too. Wonder if Upwork could add a "confidence in this platform" metric to their algorithm.
