The client I am working for is insisting that I should share my personal email with him to continue working for his company. Is that right?

As long as your contract is on Upwork and all payments go only through Upwork, you can communicate with your clients however you like.

What Petra said, plus: Why not set up an alternate email account dedicated to business correspondence? As both a FL and client operating on UW, I always exchange off-platform contact information with the person I've hired/the person who hired me because the UW message center tends to have outages at the most inconvenient times.

David, there is no rule against asking for your contact info.
There is no rule that says you need to give it to him.
Considering the fact that you can provide throwaway or single purpose email address, Skype handle and phone number using Google Voice - all at no cost to yourself - providing the client with contact info seems like a small request.
