Problem in getting a project

Hi,

It's been long that I have registered with UpWork as a freelancer . But , I am not able to get a project.

I have sent proposals , some of them shortlisted my proposal and even started taking interview which went off quite well. But , none of them hired me.

For an instance, there was a job I applied for and the person started conversation with me and infact after long questionire , he came to a conclusion to award that project to me . But after some time he said, he is not sure whether this project shuold be given to me or not just because I am new to Upwork. It was quiet disappointing for me.

Then, there was one another , who also at the verge of hiring me for the project then again , in a few minutes said, my previous developer has just pinged me and he is ready to do the job, so sorry for this time.

All, I want to say is that , whwn I apply to a job my proposal is getting shortlisted but not getting hired because I am new to Upwork , perhaps.

So, I request you to kindly  help me to get a project so that I can build upon and start making use of my knowledge and experience to earn some money. As, I have already wasted so many connects but with no profit.

Regards,

Saumya

You should start by reviewing some of the posts in the New to Upwork section of the forum, as well as the articles about avoiding scammers. I would not invest time filling out a long application--it is possible that the "client" was tricking you to get information from you.

Also, know that Upwork is highly competitive and there are many freelancers here who already have a work history. It may take a long time and a lot of connects to find a legitimate client (and you must always be on the lookout for scammers when you are new!)

Look at the profiles of the successful freelancers in your niche. What skills do they offer? How do they present them? What kind of jobs did they take when they first joined the platform? Learn from their experience.

A few profile pointers:
People look for freelancers because they want someone who can do the job from the gate. "Desire to learn more" may be a positive personality characteristic, but isn't of interest to clients. If you have done social media work, add some portfolio pieces. Create fresh pieces as samples if you don't have any past work that you can share. You won't get hired without proof that you can do the work.

Saumya, I'm a buyer. I wouldn't hire you because I don't speak your language. PPC, CPL, OMA, SEO, whatever the rest is, is a foreign language. I assume it is some sort of technospeak familiar to you and your competitors. Why is your profile intended to impress your competitors? How much money do you expect to earn from them? Consider revising your profile to impress people in position to give you money, such as .... clients.

Before running my own businesses, I ran a large division of a global company and had staff that do all of that technospeak stuff. Your profile might impress them, which is a problem. They'll view you as a competitor, and even if they don't, they have microscopic checkbooks. It's the business people who have large checkbooks and actually hire people such as yourself. Reading your competitors' profiles isn't a complete waste of time, just mostly. Read the client section of the community. I'm also a provider, and I don't care what my competition does, it's irrelevant. I care what my propective clints want and the basis on which they make decisions. I do very little hiring on Upwork, because another board is far more transparent and easier to use.

Emphasize what you can do for a business. I understand the importance of the digital world, even if I can't figure out how to be a twit, or whatever a twitter user is called. I almost never visit Facespace and rarely use Google, preferring other searh engines. I'm interested in knowing if you can help me find new customers, make my products more appealing to my target markets, help me understand my target markets and do other stuff to improve my bottom line. I don't care if it's done with Druid incantations, Hogwarts spells, or SEO. I want results. Speak to me, I can give you money.

I don't understand much about social media, in part because I was born during the latter years of the Triassic Period. I'll be impressed enough to hire you, with or without prior UW experience, if you emphasize what business results you'll help me achieve. And, why isn't your graduate degree prominently featured? It tells me that you're willing to work hard and not give up easily. Otherwise, I have no idea if it does any good.

I've hired an expert in social media from India, but with the intent of having him compare my client's social media presence to his competitors'. He had zero UW experience when I hired him, but his response blew me away. First, he showed me a dummy report using random data but letting me know what I'd be getting. Second, he asked questions about my business and my client's. Wow. I currently rely on the advice of a Kiwi (New Zealander) who is a lot more expensive than you, because he understands that I'm interested in business results, not internal measurements of meaning to his competitors.

Good luck.
