Procedure for submitting work for payment

I just accepted an offer for a fixed payment contract.  There's a button that says "submit work for payment".   Do I submit the work to the client (i.e. send a Word attachment) before, or after, I click on the "submit work for payment" button?

When you finish the work, then you will submit it while using the green "Submit Work / Request Payment" button.

Yes, you click on that button first. Then you'll be directed to a screen where you can upload the completed work that's on your computer.
