I just got an email from Upwork saying that in order for me to be able to earn my top rated badge (??? I have been top rated for 10 or so months) I have to change my title to something between 4-55 characters. It then says I can't earn the top rated badge if I choose to not make this change,
so...since I am already top rated, will it be removed if I don't change my title?!

I got the same email. I have a title. What's going on?

Hi Jessica and Andre,
I don't think you were supposed to receive this email. I'm checking with the team to sort this out.

Thank you and please let us know if we could lose top rated status over a job title...

Garnor there is now a big red alert box on my page saying I am "almost" top rated but must change my title...

I received the same box which cleared once I shortened my "title."

Hi Garnor,
I received a similar email, but this one warned me about losing out on client invites and future contracts, if I didn't update my profile title. It's a tagline I've been using for the past 4 months.
Update your profile today so you can be in a more competitive position to win client invites and contracts:
- Edit your Professional Title. Your title must be at least 4 characters and no more than 55 characters.
If these changes are not made, you may not be as competitive as your peers at winning contracts.
What's disconcerting is that I first receive a congratulatory mail for completing one year at Upwork, and then this follow-up mail within 4-5 hours.
Best,
Rekha

Hi Rekha,
Please disregard the email you received and I apologize for the confusion. While having an effective profile title is important for all freelancers, the email was sent to you in error.

Surely they aren't going to remove top rated badges over a title...? I can't even imagine why it even matters...

Hi Jessica,
No, your Top Rated status/badge won't be impacted by this.

Thanks...but...if I don't want to change my title, will I just always have the big red rectangular box on my page...?

It's entirely possible that your title is considered "too long" I myself ran into that a while ago. Not that IS the problem, and for sure one of the Mod's will chime in about this eventually.

I'd ditch the 'LinkedIn Profile' bit. Then you're not breaking the rules, and it's less ambiguous. Even though the 'Resume Writer' part kind of gives a clue to what you mean by that, it's still just essentially giving the impression that you have a LinkedIn Profile. Like if you put 'Facebook Profile' or 'Twitter Profile'... I'd think that you were announcing that you have a Facebook profile and a Twitter profile... I might not automatically make the connection that you're offering to provide some kind of service related to those things.

But many clients only want LinkedIn profiles and search by that and not resumes....

Ok, but my point is that 'LinkedIn Profile' doesn't really mean anything. You could put 'cat' on your profile, and say "well, many clients only want cat grooming services." which is great, but you've not mentioned that you do cat grooming.
The cat part could mean that you have a cat, you want a cat, you saw a cat yesterday, you had a dream about a cat last night, or any other number of things... you could be a cat trainer, a cat disposal expert, a cat painter, a tattoo artist specialising in cat imagery, a cat assassin, a cat nutritionist, an exobiologist specialising SETC, or someone who just can't get enough of delicous, deep fried cat meat, served on a bed of crispy swan wings and drizzled with the tears of baby rhinos.

Is it better now? 🙂 I hope this doesn't throw me out of the "resume writer" search though....
