So I have a project catalog, The job is almost due and the customer is okay with giving me more time for it. However, is there a drawback to that? For example, Will Upwork automatically close the project or something?

Speaking about fixed-priced projects in general (not specific to catalog), I awarded one such project as a client, the freelancer went past the due date, and the project didn't automatically close. So I don't think it's an issue; you and the client can agree on a new due date and note it in your messaging conversation on Upwork for the sake of documentation.
